Instant Observations: Eagles Beat Ravens, 24-23

Here are instant observations from the Eagles’ 24-23 win over the Ravens.

Jason Kelce Exits With Knee Sprain; Maclin, Dunlap Hurt

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason KelceEagles center Jason Kelce left the game with a right knee sprain early in the third quarter against the Ravens. He will not return.

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin also exited in the third quarter with a hip pointer after making a key block on a 24-yard catch and run by Brent Celek. Maclin, who suffered a hip injury against Cleveland, walked off the field very gingerly.

King Dunlap was forced out of the game as well with a hamstring injury and replaced by Demetress Bell at left tackle. Bell is dressing in his first game as an Eagle after being inactive Week 1 against the Browns.

Dunlap’s return is doubtful, while Maclin is questionable.

Making Sense of the Eagles’ Inactives

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean JacksonThe Eagles announced inactives, and both DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin will play against the Ravens.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Using Celek Against the Ravens

In the second half of last season, tight end Brent Celek was one of the Eagles’ most reliable, productive options in the passing game.

He averaged 69.6 yards per game and had an outstanding catch rate (receptions per targets) of 73 percent in the final 10 games. Celek led all tight ends (yes, that includes guys like Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham) in yards after the catch.

But when Jason Peters injured his Achilles in the offsesason, a reasonable question to ask was: How would it affect Celek? Specifically, would he be called on to block more in passing situations?

How The No-Huddle Impacts the Eagles Defense

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans. The Ravens offense deployed the no-huddle 36 percent of the time against the Bengals in Week 1. Judging by the 37 points and 430 total yards the offense racked up, it’s safe to say that the approach worked.

The Eagles are expecting a heavy dose of it come Sunday.

“We’re preparing for the worst,” said Trent Cole. “We’ve been preparing this whole week for that no-huddle situation.”

What does it mean for this defensive unit? And how will they cope with the challenges the no-huddle brings? Let’s break it down by position.

Eagles Cut Mike Patterson’s Salary

According to multiple reports, the Eagles have cut Mike Patterson’s salary. Patterson could miss the entire 2012 season as he recovers from offseason brain surgery.

Mike Check: Vick’s Matchup With the Ravens

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Graham Hungry For More

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon GrahamHere are the number of snaps each Eagles defensive end received in Week 1 against the Browns:

Trent Cole: 42
Jason Babin: 41
Darryl Tapp: 20
Phillip Hunt: 15
Brandon Graham: 4

Four.  That’s not a lot to work with for the former first-round pick, who has fought back from microfracture knee surgery and a torn ACL to try and get back in the mix. But Graham says he’s thankful for every morsel he’s fed.

Ed Reed Probable For Sunday

Baltimore safety Ed Reed has been a limited participant at practice this week because of a hamstring strain but is listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Eagles.

Reed injured the right hamstring during  an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Cincinnati. In the process, he became the all-time NFL leader in career interception-return yards (1,497), topping Rod Woodson.

Linebacker Paul Kruger and defensive end Pernell McPhee returned to practice and, though both listed as questionable, are expected to play against the Eagles Sunday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Ravens tackle Jah Reid, who is dealing with a strained right calf, will likely sit out.

Maclin, Jackson Both Questionable For Sunday

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy MaclinDeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin were limited participants in Friday’s practice and are officially listed as questionable on the injury report.

Maclin suffered a hip flexor and hip pointer injury against the Browns in Week 1, while Jackson hurt his hamstring at the end of practice Wednesday. Andy Reid, when asked if one had a better chance of playing than the other, said their situations are about the same.

“They are running OK,” said Reid. “We just kind of took it easy on them today. They did a decent job today with the things that they were given, which wasn’t much.”

A Look At Castillo In Year Two

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan CastilloFunny, Juan Castillo was the least talked-about man at the NovaCare facilities this week. While Marty Mornhinweg and Andy Reid and Michael Vick were taking arrows, and DeMeco Ryans and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were being praised, Castillo quietly slipped into the backdrop.

He offers so little at his press conferences, terrified of giving away anything that could help the opposition, that some reporters have given up on the exercise altogether, opting instead to visit the locker room in search of a more willing dance partner. So Castillo sits on stage in front of a modest gathering, speaks about exactly nothing for a few minutes, and then makes his way out of the auditorium and back behind the scenes.

After a year of public struggles and endless criticism, this is undoubtedly the preferred existence. A down effort against the Ravens will bring some of the heat back, but internally there is a sense that the situation has stabilized. The players have noticed a different Juan Castillo in Year Two, and it has had a ripple effect.
