There’s a New Macaron Cafe in Old City—And They Do Bulk Orders for Weddings!

Here’s a peek inside ICI Macarons & Cafe.

Just the other day, as I was driving down Arch Street in Old City, I passed by an unassuming store sign that made me do a double take. Did that say macarons? I thought to myself, secretly wishing I had pulled over to check it out. If Philly had a shop dedicated to my favorite French treats, I needed to know about it, stat.

Much to my delight, my suspicions were indeed correct, as I later discovered when PW editor Carrie suggested I reach out to Michael Tan, owner of the recently-opened ICI Macarons & Cafe.

Michael and his wife Aici launched their darling cafe at 230 Arch Street last September, offering locals a scrumptious selection of French macarons, freshly-baked treats and locally-brewed ReAnimator coffee. Buttery croissants, Kouign Amann, scones and madeleines all grace the menu here, but the real stars of the show are the macarons—they’re whipping up 27 colorful flavors (including salted caramel, peanut dark chocolate, passion fruit and lemon lavender) on a daily basis.

“The macaron is one of the French pastries that captures our fascination because of its delicacy as a cookie and because its color matches its true taste,” Michael tells us. “My wife, Aici, is the heart of the pastries in our shop, and it’s her dedication to perfection that led us to dedicate our cafe to macarons.”

And get this: ICI takes pre-orders for weddings and special events, too! They don’t provide delivery or catering services, but you’re welcome to place a bulk order of any combination of flavors; they can even create custom colors for orders of 24 or more. They’ll need two weeks to get the macarons done in time for your special day, and then you can wrap ’em up as favors or display ’em on your dessert table.

I’ll be popping by the shop tomorrow to indulge in a few of their sweets—I suggest you do the same!
