I heard this segment start yesterday morning on Good Morning America as I was brushing my teeth, and when I heard the first interviewed bride start to talk, my heart immediately sank, because I knew the type of story she was going to tell: one where she bought her dream wedding dress online, and then was greeted by a complete and utter heartbreaking mess when she opened the box.

There are plenty of places where you can purchase a gorgeous and authentic wedding dress online—we’ve told you about them! See: BHLDN, J.Crew, Nicole Miller, among others—but that’s not what we’re talking about here. What we’re talking about here are the non-brand websites that seem to sell legit wedding dresses, only to mail you a ragged pile of cheap, jaggedly cut fabric and shoddy workmanship—in short, nothing you would probably want to wear while sitting around your house, let alone on your wedding day.

There are quite a few great reasons for buying your wedding dress online, so by all means, click away. But the lesson in these kinds of reports is to keep your eyes open and do your research before you do—because we really, really don’t want you to open up a complete and utter heartbreaking mess when what you were expecting was the dress of your dreams. So take a look, please before you shop:
