On Saturday, November 14, 2009, Apple Vacations held their Little Smiles Stars Ball at the Please Touch Museum. More than 800 guests, including Mayor Michael Nutter, attended. All proceeds from the evening went to the Little Smiles organization, which donates toys and other items to help children in local hospitals, shelters, or hospices.

On Thursday, November 12, 2009, The Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC) held their annual Champion for Young Children event at the Comcast Center. Guests of this family event were entertained by award-winning book characters from Harold and the Purple Crayon, performed by Enchantment Theatre Company. This year’s award recipient was Senator Robert P. Casey, who also received a citation from the City of Philadelphia from Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown for his efforts to support early education. On Thursday, November 12, 2009, Philadelphia magazine and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board presented the Sixth-Annual Philadelphia Whiskey Festival, sponsored by Melitta and KYW. The event took place at The Union League of Philadelphia, where guests sampled a collection of premium whiskies and other fine spirits while enjoying tasty bites from The Capital Grille, Village Whiskey, The Palm Restaurant, and Tavern on Broad. The evening also featured a meet and greet with Fred Noe, the great grandson of Jim Beam, and a Melitta Coffee Lounge and a Cigar Bar featuring Holt’s cigars. On Thursday, November 12, 2009, Suzanne F. Roberts received Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s M. Powell Lawton Quality of Life Award at The Union League, in Center City. The award reception and dinner followed PCA’s annual M. Powell Lawton Conference on Urban Aging, which was also held at The Union League that day. The proceeds generated from the M. Powell Lawton award dinner and conference benefited the Emergency Fund for older Philadelphians.
