Here’s What’s Happening With Today’s Snow

We'll likely get between three to six inches by 1 p.m. – but wind gusts later on could create a recipe for disaster.

Philly this morning looks significantly different from the 60-degree paradise it was yesterday.

The first significant snowstorm of the year is upon us, and you can expect some mild chaos throughout the day as a result. Here’s what you need to know.

It’s going to be a little nasty out there. Last night’s rain changed to snow early this morning, and we’re supposed to get between three to six inches throughout the day. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 1 p.m. A wind advisory has been issued for between noon and 6 p.m. tonight, and gusts could reach 60 mph – so power outages are possible later on. Mayor Jim Kenney will provide an update on storm management efforts at noon.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike and PennDOT have lowered highway speeds. The speed limit is now 45 mph on I-76, I-95, I-476 and I-676, as well as U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202 and 422 and State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309. There is also a 45 mph speed limit on stretches of the New Jersey Turnpike, and the speed limit on the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross, and Commodore Barry bridges is now 25 mph.

The city issued a snow emergency last night. If your car is parked along a snow route, you need to move it to avoid being towed and ticketed. Other meter violations will not be enforced by the Philadelphia Parking Authority today.

As far as public transportation goes, things are running relatively smoothly – so far. Subways, buses and trolleys are all operating as usual, with the exception of bus route 35 and the substitute buses that were running along the Market-Frankford Line in place of the subway cars that were taken out of service earlier this week. Expect Regional Rail delays throughout the day – and check TrainView for updates.

NJ Transit is offering system-wide cross-honoring today, and PATCO has issued a snow schedule.

Most schools in the area are closed, including those in the Philadelphia School District and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Most flights at the Philadelphia International Airport were canceled this morning.
