Report: Roseman Received Contract Extension

Eagles general manger Howie Roseman received a four-to-five year contract extension in June, a team source tells Jeff McLane of the Inquirer.

Jeffrey Lurie gave Roseman the deal when Joe Banner stepped down as team president. The timing is significant because it suggests Lurie views Roseman’s performance in a different category than that of Andy Reid. As has been well-documented, Lurie said before the season that an 8-8 record would not be good enough for Reid to remain the head coach in 2013.

But based on the report, it seems likely that Roseman will be part of Lurie’s brain trust in picking a new head coach if he does in fact part ways with Reid after the season.

Roseman became the Eagles’ general manager in January of 2010 after serving two years as the vice president of player personnel.

“Howie has done an excellent job,” Lurie said back in August. “I think general managers get measured by player acquisitions, the draft, trades, how they communicate with the rest of the organization, how they communicate with the players, [and] their strategy going forward. There is a lot to analyze, and I think Howie is doing an outstanding job. As I said, it is early to make a determination of this draft class. Just based on a few months it is extremely promising.”

Roseman’s presence could also affect which head coaches the Eagles are able to attract. Some of the more well-established names could prefer full control in personnel matters. Will they get that here? Or will the move be to give Roseman more power?

Those are the questions that will likely need answers in the next couple months.
