The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia just unveiled a very handy new website aimed at parents and families of kids with autism. It’s called the CAR Autism Roadmap, a comprehensive tool and directory put together by the experts at CHOP’s Center for Autism Research.

“We are very excited to announce a brand new resource from The Center for Autism Research (CAR) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia that was years in the making,” said an announcement on CAR’s Facebook page this morning. “Whether families are just starting out with a diagnosis or have been living with ASD for years, there are customizable resources, ideas and guidance as well as a directory for families searching for therapists, support groups, and other resources in the tri-state area.”

The website includes articles written by staff and specialists at CAR and CHOP, as well as parents and professionals from around the region. The site has sections for everything from home life to education to community support to treatment. Within each category, you can further narrow your search to specific problems or issues or filter for articles specifically focused, say, on pre-schoolers or boys.

What I think parents will find most useful, however, is the site’s detailed directory of resources and services. According to the site’s FAQ, the data for this directory came from “extensive lists of area resources which they [staff at CAR] have always been willing to share with families and individuals. These lists were supplemented by lists from regional autism organizations and from recommendations from area support groups.” The directory allows you to search for autism experts and services aimed at mental and behavioral health; speech and language; social skills and play; recreation; and, of course, medical specialists. It includes resources available in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
