Packing a picnic basket for a day trip to the beach can be a monotonous task. Water bottles, ham-and-cheese sandwiches on white, bags of salt and vinegar chips. Or maybe, because you’re a true Philadelphian, you’re making a pit stop at Wawa for an Italian hoagie with extra sweet peppers. There’s nothing wrong with the usual. Old habits die hard and it’s a fact that hoagies taste better with salt water in the air. This summer however, we’re breaking routine and packing up some of our local Philly favorites to bring down the shore because everyone needs a taste of home away from home.
Swap your summer pilsners and pale ales for something with a little more tang. Devil’s Den will soon be serving beers that are sour, tart, bitter and sharp. Beginning Saturday, August 16th until Friday, August 22nd, the gastropub will be celebrating their 5th Annual Sourfest. For seven days one draft tower will be completely devoted to sour beers. That’s a total of 8 lines and plenty of sours to try throughout the week.
In keeping with the celebration, Tuesday August 19th, Don Russell, better known as Joe Sixpack, will be hosting a sour tasting and brewing class. Devil’s Den will serve as your classroom as you learn the fine techniques behind preparing a pucker worthy brew. All students will also enjoy appetizers and a tasting of six different sour beers such as Free Will Peach Lambic, Bruery Oude Tart, Barren Hill Berliner Weisse, Bom Wild & Funky #1, Allagash Confluence and Tilquin Gueze. The class is $35 per person and tickets can be purchased at the bar or online.

Come one, come all, because Night Market is back Thursday, August 14th and you better bring your appetite. The Food Trust will be hosting the street food festival from 6 to 10 p.m. on Lancaster Avenue between 35th and 39th Streets. Over 80 of Philly’s finest food vendors on four wheels will occupy the five blocks. Some new faces will be among the crowds such as, SeoulFull Philly, serving up a taste of South Korea in Philadelphia, Luscious Bakery, cooking all kinds of brunch favorites from the sweet to the savory, The Flying Deutschman, to meet all of your schnitzel needs, The Grilled Cheese Truck, serving… well you know and finally Siddiq’s Real Fruit Water Ice, whom you can count on for an authentic Philadelphia treat. While you’re trying and testing food trucks galore, sip on some brew provided by Yards Brewery and catch a listen to the West Philadelphia Orchestra. Alter Street prepare yourselves, because it’s almost time for GreenStreet Coffee Roasters’ 3rd annual block party. On Saturday, August 16th, the Philadelphia-based, fair trade coffee company will be hosting a day devoted to beer, barbecue, music, games and of course, their coffee.
The merrymaking starts on the 1900 block of Alter Street in Point Breeze at 1 p.m and runs until 7 p.m. The event is $10 and all of the proceeds are donated to the Fresh Artists Program and Deva Watson’s Palates To Palettes. Both organizations support the continuation of art education in Philadelphia schools.

Tuesday, August 26th, Blackfish invites you to their Australian Black Truffle Dinner. The tasting menu is comprised of four dishes featuring the prized ingredient. Guests will start with duck and truffle rillettes, followed by truffle dumpling, albacore and truffle ballontine and finish with beef and truffle parfait.
The dinner, curated by chef and owner Chip Roman with the help of chef de cuisine, Yianni Arhontoulis is $65 per person.
Earlier today, the Passyunk Post postulated that the former Bell’s Delly at 4th and Cross Streets in Pennsport could become a “farm-to-table” restaurant. Capitalizing on that tip, we’ve learned that the former owner of E’s Coffee, Andrew Michaels is bringing his vision of an American-style bistro to life.
Michaels, who is also the general contractor, is in the midst of demolition within the building. Michaels isn’t doing itself and gives a shout out to his sub-contractors, Joseph Giannone for the plumbing and Generation 3 Electric for all things, well electric.
Our neighbors, the Pennsylvania Dutch, are bringing it to the big city for a three day festival starting today. And by “it” we mean Amish-style pork sausage sandwiches, apple dumplings, donuts, funnel cake, hand-churned ice cream and basically all of your favorite Lancaster County culinary delights.
The festivities take place at Reading Terminal Market and continue into the weekend until Saturday, August 9th when the celebration moves outside to Arch Street in true county fair style. The outdoor portion of the festival will include horse drawn carriage rides, a farm animal petting zoo and live bluegrass music. When you’re stuffed with fudge and nut brittle you can browse the crafts section for wooden toys and homemade quilts.

And on the 8th day, there were affogatos.
What is an affogato you ask? It’s basically the divine marriage of hot, caffeinated espresso with frosty, creamy ice cream. When translated, the Italian drink literally means “drowned” referring to the dollop ice cream swimming in espresso. Yum– said every caffeine junkie and ice cream enthusiast everywhere.
The good people at Elixr Coffee want all of Philadelphia to experience this mouth-watering treat featuring Little Baby’s Ice Cream. The collaborators will choose two seasonal ice creams skillfully paired with two unique espressos for the affogato days special. Other great news? There will be both a dairy and vegan option available so everyone can bask in affogato greatness.

August in Fairmount means lobster galore at London Grill, and there’s plenty of drawn butter to go around. The bar and main dining room will offer a special menu celebrating summers favorite crustacean. From the kitchen you can expect a lobster bisque garnished with crème fraiche ($8), the classic New England lobster roll with hand-cut fries ($20) and a savory lobster cheesecake ($14), a cream cheese spread of lobster, peppers and seasonings served with crostini.
If you’re in the mood for something more akin to what they’re serving in Maine, sit down for the three-course New England dinner. Guests start with a house salad, followed by a 1 ¼ pound steamed whole lobster and corn on the cob (with drawn butter of course) and finish with a house-baked berry buckle. The dinner is $32 per person.

Thursday, August 14th, New Jersey wants you to celebrate one of the greatest food combinations that has ever existed.
The Collingswood Grand Ballroom will be hosting the premiere South Jersey Bacon and Beer Festival. From 6-8:30 p.m guests can support the Crossroads Program, an organization which aims to raise awareness and funding for area foster homes and at-risk youths, by chowing down on bacon inspired dishes provided by local restaurants and sipping on some brew. Participating breweries include, Yards, Flying Fish, Weyerbacher and many more. The cost is $35 a person which buys you entrance to the festival and benefits the Crossroads Program.
