Matyson Closes

Matyson’s final tasting menu. The BYOB closes after 12 years.

Center City BYOB, Matyson has closed after a 12-year run. Several staff members appeared in a photo on Instagram saying, “The end of a good run. Thanks for everything!” That post has since been deleted.

A quick stop in to the 19th Street restaurant today confirmed the closing. The chairs were up on the tables when they would usually be ready for lunchtime diners. A woman was cleaning out the hostess stand and confirmed that Matyson was closed. Towards the back of the restaurant, business casual types huddled and a couple others held large folders of documents.

No one cared to comment more than to confirm the closure. The restaurant was originally owned by Matthew and Sonjia Spector (Matthew + Sonjia = Matyson) until they moved to California in 2007. At that point the kitchen was taken over by two young chefs, Brian Lofink (now Sidecar and Kraftwork) and Ben Puchowitz (Cheu Noodle Bar and Bing Bing Dim Sum). Matyson was long recognized for its tasting menus which twice won Best of Philly awards. The restaurant also appeared on Philadelphia magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants list four times.

If we had to bet, we’d say the space won’t be empty for long.

UPDATE: We’ve learned that Matyson will become the second location for the Milkhouse Grilled Cheese & Ice Cream.
