Playdar: Celebrating Independence Day With Pop’s Miss Independents

G Philly resident DJ Patrick DeMarco compiles his Fourth of July playlist, consisting of only the most independent pop divas.

Happy Independence Gay, one and all! Now, let’s light up those fireworks and launch an explosive playlist of Fourth of July anthems from some of pop’s most independent divas.

Faster than you can say, “slutty Uncle Sam costume,” those grand displays of fireworks will be taking off and illuminating the Philadelphia night sky. To make the day we celebrate our independence even more patriotic, I’ve put together a playlist for you that is crawling with loud-and-proud divas — everyone from Martina McBride to Kelly Clarkson. But of course, I had to kick off the list with Whitney Houston‘s timeless and ever-amazing performance of “The Star Spangled Banner.” I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say that there is no greater rendition of our national anthem.

Rejoice, all: with DOMA and Prop. 8 officially in the trash bin, a marriage equality bill about to be introduced in Pennsylvania, Delaware welcomed into the fold of marriage equality states and several marks of progress made in New Jersey, there’s never been a better year to kick back, enjoy the music and bask in both our gay and U.S. pride.

Cheers!
