Report: Kelly Adds Press Taylor To Eagles’ Staff

Chip Kelly has added another coach to his staff, according to a report.

And no, it’s not a defensive coordinator (although we’ll get to that in a moment).

Tulsa grad assistant (in charge of quarterbacks) Press Taylor will be the Eagles’ new quality control coach on offense, according to FootballScoop.com. Taylor has two years of coaching experience.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Dixon And the QB Picture

The Eagles are showing interest in quarterback Dennis Dixon, a league source confirmed to Birds 24/7.

Dixon, who spent this past season on the practice squad for the Super Bowl Champion Ravens, is free to sign a futures contract with another team. The Eagles and Dixon’s representation have been discussing a potential deal. If negotiations go smoothly, the former Oregon Duck will be reunited with Chip Kelly.

What does it all mean?

Sources: Vick To Stay On Roster Past Feb. 6 Deadline

The Eagles will not cut Michael Vick. Not yet, anyway.

Much has been made of the upcoming February 6 deadline, when $3 million of Vick’s contract becomes guaranteed. According to multiple sources, however, the team does not intend to release Vick before then.

Offseason Primer: Eagles Wide Receivers

How will DeSean Jackson’s role change? Does Jeremy Maclin figure into the team’s future plans? Will the Eagles make a splash at wide receiver in free agency? Answering those questions and more in this offseason breakdown of the team’s wide-receiver situation.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Bizarre Ray Rhodes Factor

If you want to win a Super Bowl, it’s probably best to just hire a former Ray Rhodes assistant to be your head coach.

Worked for Baltimore. John Harbaugh spent most of his time in Philadelphia working for Andy Reid, but it was Rhodes who hired him to be the Eagles’ special teams coordinator back in 1998. Harbaugh spent Sunday night dancing in confetti. He now has a .675 win percentage, three AFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl title in five seasons with the Ravens.

That is not Rhodes’ only claim to Lombardi fame. Not by a long shot.

Vick More Open To Return After Meetings With Kelly

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael VickAfter multiple meetings with Chip Kelly, Michael Vick is much bigger on the idea of staying in Philadelphia than he was just a few weeks ago.

Vick was ready to move on from the Eagles after a very bumpy 2012 season. His offensive line ripped apart by injuries, the 32-year-old had his worst campaign since taking over as the team’s starter. He sustained a concussion in November against the Cowboys, lost his job to Nick Foles, and then was forced into action in the regular-season finale — a 42-7 loss to the Giants. Fed up by the group’s lack of effort, he ripped into his teammates once the 4-12 season had mercifully come to an end.

Time helped soothe his frustrations, and the quarterback’s mentality really shifted after talking to Kelly. According to a source close to Vick, the two have had a couple meetings now, and Vick came away very high on the former Oregon coach.

Classy Gesture Connects Jason Kelce And Ed Reed

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason KelceThe game clock read 11:45 in the third quarter at the exact moment Ed Reed made contact with Jason Kelce’s right knee.

It was Week 2, and the Eagles were trailing the Ravens, 17-7. The line of scrimmage was the Baltimore 30-yard-line, and the call was a stretch play to LeSean McCoy to the right side. Reed started 12 yards back as the single high safety. The ball was snapped, McCoy took the handoff, and Kelce used his athleticism to control nose tackle Terrence Cody. Reed, meanwhile, charged towards the ball-carrier.

At right around the 28, he got low and dove at McCoy’s legs. The running back felt some contact, but stumbled forward for a 9-yard gain. Reed failed to hit McCoy squarely, and his dive continued into Kelce’s right knee. After the whistle blew, the Eagles’ center was on his hands and knees in pain. The training staff came out, and he turned over to his back, grabbing his knee.

The result was a torn MCL, a partially-torn ACL and the end of Kelce’s season.

This is the NFL, and such injuries are relatively common. Scan the injury reports on a Monday afternoon during the season, and you’ll see similar notes around the league. But this particular injury gnawed at Reed.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Chip Kelly’s Offseason To-Do List

With the conclusion of last night’s Super Bowl, we now have about seven months until we get to watch another NFL game.

That’s a depressing thought.

But the good news is the offseason officially begins today. And for the Eagles, the next few months will go a long way in determining the direction of the franchise. The man in focus is new head coach Chip Kelly.

Keeping that in mind, here’s a simple to-do list with what’s coming up between now and the draft.

Did the Eagles Court Alex Smith Last Year?

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Eagles did not want to go into last season with Michael Vick as their only option at quarterback.

There have already been multiple reports indicating that they looked into signing Peyton Manning. And rumors have surfaced about them trying to trade up to pick Robert Griffin III.

But here’s a new name to add to to that mix: Alex Smith.

DeSean: Kelly Will Drive Defensive Coordinators Crazy

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean JacksonDeSean Jackson offered his initial thoughts on Chip Kelly last week, but he was able to expand on them today during an interview in New Orleans with NFL.com.

The Eagles’ speedy wide receiver said he’s familiar with Kelly’s style of play and sounds legitimately excited to be playing for the new head coach.

“Talking to Chip Kelly, he actually said, ‘I was on the opposite side, watching you score touchdowns,'” Jackson said. “So now, it’s actually a good situation because I am very familiar with the play style, his offensive style, and I think in the NFL, he’s going to have defensive coordinators going crazy. I’m just excited, and hopefully he’s able to come in here and just throw that twist to it.”

Eagles Switching To Kelly Green Uniforms? Not So Fast

The Eagles are aware of the petition (now with north of 9,000 votes) to reinstate Kelly Green as the team’s official color, but there is very little they can do in the short term to make that a reality.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Expectations With the No. 4 Pick

Earlier this week, we rounded up a bunch of mock drafts.

Yes, it’s still relatively early in the process, but there is little consensus at the No. 4 pick, with seven different players being projected to the Birds at that spot: Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, Alabama guard Chance Warmack, Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith and Texas A&M outside linebacker Damontre Moore.

The importance of nailing the pick cannot be overstated. Over 200 players will be selected in April. Only three will be off the board when it’s the Eagles’ turn to pick.
