First Friday Picks: Joshua Scott Albert’s Exhibition Debut, New Work from Ted Walsh, and More

Tomorrow is First Friday, which means the art world of Old City opens its doors to the public for a night of gallery-hopping and exhibit receptions. This week a few other neighborhoods get in on the action, too. Without further ado, our guide to October First Friday in Philadelphia:

“Salvage” – The Debut Photo Exhibition from Joshua Scott Albert
You may remember Joshua Scott Albert from his eyebrow-raising public antics, or his controversial and now-defunct blog, Staph Meal, which caused trouble for Philadelphia restaurateurs a few years back. The trouble maker-turned-photojournalist is exhibiting his work for the first time this Friday. After the exhibit, stay tuned for live music by punk-metal band Thorazine, McRad, Posers, and Cheerbleeders. Friday, October 3rd, 6 p.m. followed by music at 9 p.m., $10, ages 21+, The Fire, 412 West Girard Avenue.

“In Reverse” by Terri Fridkin
Terri Fridkin’s hand-pulled prints focus on structure, pattern, line and color to create a complex, yet simple work of art. View Fridkin’s exhilarating exhibition now through November 2nd. The gallery will also hold an artist reception for the exhibition on Saturday, October 18th. Friday, October 3rd, 5 p.m.-7 p.m., Muse Gallery, 52 North 2nd Street.

“Complementary Colors”
“Opposites attract” seems to be the theme of this exhibit. Complementary colors, or color pairs that strongly contrast with each other, can be compelling and perplexing at the same time. This group exhibition, on view through November 1st, features Peter Combe, Alexis Granwell, Clint Jukkala, and Donald Martiny presenting their individual interpretations of what complementary colors mean to them. “Spaces Passed Through: New Paintings By Ted Walsh”
The PAFA Alumni Gallery is currently featuring new works by Ted Walsh, a 2011 MFA graduate, who works in the contemporary American realist tradition. His paintings explore place and memory through landscape and figures. Walsh is a South Jersey native and has exhibited his works around the Northeast. The exhibit runs through November 30th, but the gallery holds its opening reception on Friday. Friday, October 3rd, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., PAFA Alumni Gallery, 118 North Broad Street.

“Green Slice,” Graceann Warn

“Design: Four Perspectives”
As a complement to Design Philadelphia’s celebration of the city as a creative center, Snyderman-Works Galleries is installing work by four distinct artist/designers. Featuring the work of Lanny Bergner, Gary Magakis, Eileen Sutton, and Graceann Warn, this collaboration will be open from this Friday through November 29th. The artists work in a variety of mediums, which makes for an exciting combination. Friday, October 3rd, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Snyderman-Works Galleries, 303 Cherry Street.

“Apollonian/Dionysian: The Constraints of Freedom”
This massive exhibit featuring over 20 unique artists was first conceived of— and curated by—artist and muralist Paul Santoleri. The exhibit, which includes a rotating wall painting that will change over the exhibit’s run, explores the artist’s conflict between creative practice and being a functioning member of society. The artists represented come from Philadelphia and as far as South Africa, using media as diverse as photography, jewelry, and animation. Friday, October 3rd, 5 p.m.-7 p.m., Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine Street.

POST: 4th Annual Member Exhibition
In conjunction with the 15th annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (running October 11th and 12th, and October 25th and 26th) the 3rd Street Gallery will put on a special group show. Displaying the work from the 40 artists of their cooperative gallery, this group show runs through November 2nd with an artist reception Sunday, October 26. Friday, October 3rd, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., 3rd Street Gallery, 45 N. 2nd Street.

“Philadelphia: The Streets Where We Live”
The Artists’ House opens this new exhibition during First Friday. Featuring artists from the area and from as far flung as London, the exhibit focuses on different views of the City of Brotherly Love. Works done in a variety of media and genres abound, giving the show a special take on our everyday surroundings. The gallery will give an artist reception Sunday, October 5th from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Friday, October 3rd, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Artists’ House, 57 North 2nd Street.

“Tamsen Wojtanowski: Shelter”
Now through November 22nd, Tamsen Wojtanowski will display her cyanotypes at 110 CHURCH. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that creates a cyan-colored print, also known as blueprints. Originally from New York, Wojtanowski received her MFA in photography from Temple’s Tyler School of Art where she has taught as an assistant adjunct professor.
