Remember what a big deal it was when Crumbs Bake Shop came to town? We reported on the announcement, tracked the location in Rittenhouse Square and it even made the news when their awning went up. Cupcake aficionados were honestly excited about this publicly-traded, bi-coastal operation coming to Philly.
Well, now the Rittenhouse location is closed. It lasted just over a year in its space, and such a rapid departure for a proven operation like Crumbs has us thinking: Does this closure say something about us as a city?

VH1′s Mob Wives breakout star Alicia DiMichele stops by Gigi Andrew‘s Ms. Goody Cupcakes on East Passyunk Avenue, and samples one of the new “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” flavors which come with shots of either coconut rum, Amaretto, Chambord, or Jack and Hennessy. When DiMichele isn’t filming the fourth season of Mob Wives in Manhattan, she can be found at her clothing boutique, “Addiction,” with locations on East Passyunk and in Cherry Hill.
Over the weekend she filmed a music video with rapper Ryan Banks and her co-star on Mob Wives, Natalie “Vegas” Guercio, at Lit Nightclub at Second and Spring Garden.

There are plenty of reasons to be bullish on South Street west of Broad but a couple established businesses are on the way out. The Philly Cupcake location at 20th and South has closed after nine months. The cupcake shop proprietors had a disagreement with their landlords and according to Michael Klein, there were suits and countersuits. The original Philly Cupcake remains at 12th and Chestnut. We’re with Naked Philly in hoping the next tenant chooses a more subtle color palette.
Also closing, is 15th and South’s Baja Room. The odd Mexican joint has been a mainstay at that intersection but we never got understood the Best of New York sticker in the window or the claims that celebrities ate there. According to Naked Philly, Baja Room will resurface at 1001 East Passyunk.
We’re intrigued to see what’s next for these corners.

Betty’s Speakeasy at 2241 Grays Ferry Avenue is calling it quits after five years. The Graduate Hospital area shop was known for its coffee, pastries and most of all, for its cupcakes. As the poster above explains, this is a personal decision, not a business decision.
If you want one last cupcake, you do have some time. The last day is set for July 31st.

No word yet on a location or opening time frame. <sarcasm>Gosh, we hope it’s this month so we can try the Berry Silly Cereal cupcake of the month.</sarcasm>.

Gretchen Fantini of the Sweet Box Cupcakes truck is getting a storefront at 13th and Panama, just down from Dirty Frank’s. Fantini has won praise at the Vendy’s as well as from Craig LaBan and others. Fantini joins Tom McCusker of Honest Tom’s as a graduate from the wheeled food scene.
The Sweet Box storefront should be ready to go within two months. The truck will continue to operate.

The attractive and underused space at the southeast corner of 20th and South (it was a seldom open gallery) has a sign in the window that it will be opening as the second Philly Cupcake. The first location is at 1132 Chestnut Street and the team behind the cupcake shop has also opened Philly Chocolate at 1315 Walnut Street.
