Seattle Times Vet to Join Philly.com

Eric Ulken will oversee digital strategy.

A small announcement out of Interstate General Media this afternoon: Eric Ulken is joining the company as executive director of digital strategy for Philly.com “and the company’s other digital news properties.”

That last in-quotes part can be taken to mean the new leadership of the company is serious about a digital strategy that places Philly.com at the forefront — it’s the traffic-getter after all — while doing a better job of sending readers to the sites for the daily papers, the Inquirer and Daily News.

Ulken is a digital vet, having served in several capacities at the Seattle Times since 2011. (His time there would have overlapped that of David Boardman, Temple University’s dean of media and communication, who was Seattle Times executive editor before coming to Philadelphia in 2013.) Prior to that, he spent several years working on the website at the L.A. Times. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri.

Ulken starts work Sept. 10.
