House Passes LGBTQ-Inclusive Violence Against Women Act

The landmark decision says sexual orientation and gender identity can "no longer be a legitimate basis for denial of VAWA victim services."

The House of Representatives, which is controlled by Republicans, voted today to pass Senate Bill S.47, a bi-partisan version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that includes protections for LGBTQ people. On Queerty, Terra Slavinof of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center shares:

In a landmark shift in national politics, the House today, for the first time in history, passed sexual orientation and gender identity non-discrimination protections. In each and every state in the country, sexual orientation and gender identity will now no longer be a legitimate basis for denial of VAWA victim services.

The next step is to slip this baby onto Obama’s desk, and it should be no surprise that he plans on signing it into law.
