Wear Purple for Spirit Day
Thursday, Oct. 20, is Spirit Day, a day when LGBT activists are asking millions of Americans to wear purple to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth and to speak out against bullying.
The awareness campaign was started last year by a teenager named Brittany McMillan in response to her peers who had committed suicide after being bullied and harassed for their sexual orientation and gender identity.
Today, Spirit Day is being observed by schools, organizations, corporations, the media and individuals around the country. Purple was chosen for its place on the rainbow flag symbolizing one’s “spirit.”
