The Best Craft Beers From Philadelphia

We rank the best IPAs, saisons, lagers and ales from Philadelphia brewers.

Philly Beer Week happens this month, and that got us thinking: What is the best local brew out there? So to answer that question, we sampled, then we sampled some more. We argued over the best beer in each particular style and who would be the overall champ — One Beer to Rule Them All.

And then, when all that was done, we ranked the top 25 best local beers and stacked them the way your old man or the corner bar would.

So behold — the Philly Beeramid of Excellence. And drink up.

  • Nectar

    Nugget was horrible this year.

  • BestWorstBest

My own personal local pyramid has: less Golden Monkey, several more pilsners, one Kolsch, surely at least one beer from Dock St, and puts Ich Bin Ein Berlinner Weisse at it’s rightful place up top.

  • Victor Hurdle

Would have liked to see something from Evil Genius, Free Will, Neshaminy Creek, or Lancaster Brewing Companies make the list, but certainly excited to try some of these new ones I have not yet.

  • MatthewGavin

Victory Swing should be on this list and take the Yards IPA off…

  • nightman

I guess Philadelphia Brewing Company is the redheaded step-child?

    • Charles Southgate

      Consistentcy counts.

      • Dan

I dunno, their beers consistently suck. Can’t name one good one.

I’m a fan of Fleur de Lehigh and Kilty Pleasure, agreed that their year-round brews aren’t the greatest.

          • b mo

Hops from the Hood, and Shackamaximum are their two best beers.

          • Saddly, Fleur de Lehigh was a letdown this year. In the past, I’ve really enjoyed it. I also am a fan of PBC’s seasonal beers that weren’t available at the time of the tasting.

        • John Knorr

I enjoy Harvest from the Hood, bit little else from them.

  • mmm beer

No Boxcar? 1492 tops at least 10 of these bums!

    • Boo-urns

Boxcar? BWAAAHAAAAHAAAA… next you’ll be asking why Round Guys and Prism aren’t on the list either.

  • Bryan Park

    No Victory HopDevil?

  • Tom

    No Weyerbacher? C’mon now….

    • Natalie S.

Merry Monks is on the list

  • roma258

Yards Pale Ale over the consistently delicious ESA? Not sure about that one…

  • Natalie S.

    Dock Street?

  • dbo

Honestly, a list without Stoudt’s Gold, Stoudt’s Pils, Prima Pils, George Washington Porter, and Neshaminy County Line IPA, is a flawed list.

    • dbo

      also, ESA.

  • Scratch McCracken

Tröegs? Why not list breweries in North Jersey or NYC if your keeping it “local”?
