Eagles Waive 10 Players

The Eagles cut their roster down to 80 players today.

Here are the guys they waived: WR Elvis Akpla, safety Wade Bonner, defensive end Xavier Brown, wide receiver Brian Hernandez (injured), wide receiver McKay Jacobson, wide receiver Tiger Jones, offensive lineman Alfred McCullough, safety Tom Nelson, cornerback Kevin Thomas and offensive lineman Thomas Welch.

No real surprises, although a couple names stand out.

Nelson had mixed in with Jaiquawn Jarrett with the second-team safeties late at training camp. He was active for four games last year and had five special-teams tackles. But Nelson suffered a high ankle sprain in the Patriots preseason game.

The other notable name is Thomas. During camp, the Eagles acquired him from the Colts in a trade that sent linebackers Moise Fokou and Greg Lloyd to Indianapolis. But clearly, they didn’t see enough the last few weeks to warrant hanging on to him. Thomas was not eligible for a practice squad spot.

Looking ahead, the Eagles have to cut five more players by 4 p.m. Monday. And they have to get down to the final 53 by 9 p.m. on August 31.

Sad to see Akpla didn’t make it – I was hoping he’d work out.

Kind of wrong that Nelson didn’t make it over Jarrett. That is basically egos and money getting in the way of decisions in the front office

I think that the guys currently on the PUP or NFI lists, who do count against the 90 man limit, don’t count against the 75 man limit. Not sure about that but they might not need to make 5 more cuts at this time, they might only need to make two more for now.
