Freddie Mitchell Getting More Publicity This Week Than in His Entire Career

Freddie MitchellOne name that, not surprisingly, has popped up a lot this week is that of former Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell. Thanks to Giants receiver Plaxico Burress’s declaration of a 23-17 victory, there have been lots of column inches devoted to explaining how trash-talking the Patriots usually backfires and invoking the “tugging on Superman’s cape” metaphor. Case in point, Fred Ex’s famously preposterous Super Bowl week trash-talk three years ago that didn’t have even the slightest bit of follow-through — and probably cost him his job. (more…)

Jon Runyan’s Gay Sex Appeal

jrunyanOutSports, an online sports magazine for gay men, recently released its “All-Hot Team,” a starting lineup of the sexiest men in professional football. Three Eagles made the cut.

Defensive do-nothing Jevon Kearse hit the list with this praise from a Sporting News writer: “It’s tough not to stare at his chest, arms and shoulders because, damn, it’s all muscle. And it’s all good.” I’ll say. Then there’s linebacker Takeo Spikes, who, to me, looks like a blown-up Lego man with teeth marks, but the writer says, “A smoldering intensity wants me to take on Takeo.”

Perhaps the most surprising choice is burly offensive lineman Jon Runyan. In my opinion, there are ten better-looking starters. Hell, there are better-looking Eagles on the practice squad. But you can’t underestimate Big John’s bear appeal. For the uninitiated, Wikipedia explains: (more…)

Tierney to Unions: “We Must Cut Costs by 10 Percent”

This morning’s meeting over at 400 North Broad was worse than anybody thought. Straight from a Newspaper Guild release:

Tierney: We Face A Dire Situation

The company held a meeting this morning with representatives of all the unions at which publisher Brian Tierney described a grim financial picture for Philadelphia Newspapers. Citing the struggling economy and PN problems meeting debt requirements, Tierney predicted “a dire situation” by summer or fall if the company cannot find ways to cut costs by 10 percent.

Company executives intend to meet one-on-one with each union to discuss ways in which savings might be achieved.

They did not say what would happen if savings targets are not met, but made references to outsourcing jobs overseas. Tierney said he is determined to not lose investors’ money.

The Guild’s representatives at the one-hour session were PN Unit Chair Diane Mastrull and Local Representative Bill Ross.

Sadly, Tierney was especially harsh about our advertising sales staff, saying its union affiliation hampers him from getting the results the company needs. He threatened job cuts if the Guild prevails in arbitrations over what it contends were unjust firings of five advertising reps. In essence, the company is asking the Guild to violate the law by refusing to represent its members. Quite simply, the Guild will not oblige.

We will, however, as we have been doing, work with the company to attempt to find ways the Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com can thrive and be a leader in an industry that needs creativity—not finger-pointing—to guide it through these difficult times.

We urge all members with any ideas for building revenue or cutting expenses to communicate them to Guild officers or to voices@local-10.com. We will then prepare a comprehensive response to the company’s request for help.

Stay tuned to the Daily Examiner for updates. — Steve Volk

Herschel Walker Has Multiple Personalities (NO, HE DOESN’T)

Herschel WalkerRemember the 94 WYSP promos back in the early ’90s with Herschel Walker where they would play “New Kid In Town” by the Eagles followed by Herschel saying how happy he was to be in Philadelphia? Remember when Walker was the missing piece of a franchise longing for a pure running back — even one who was probably on the downside of his career?

No Ocho Cinco, Por Favor

Ocho CincoThere’s been a rising movement that seems to want to bring Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver (another disruptive, poisonous wide receiver, mind you) Chad Johnson to Philadelphia. It started with an item in the Inquirer, further stoked by a Cincinnati Enquirer story, then just let loose on the blogs for Eagles fans across the world to cream themselves over.

And now, all of a sudden, there’s this crap.

Sheldon Brown’s Baffling Contrarianism Continues

Sheldon Brown on Sports FinalAs pointed out today on The 700 Level, Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown once again threw a potentially volatile quote out into the mainstream, this time while discussing a week-old blog post in which Donovan McNabb he requested “more playmakers” on both sides of the ball in 2008.

Brown, appearing Sunday night on NBC 10’s Sports Final with woolly-bearded Howard Eskin and John Clark, responded to McNabb’s opinion with the usual amount of blunt honesty/utter contempt. In addition to Brown’s assessment that McNabb “threw teammates under the bus” with his comment, he also not-so-subtly poked a stick at McNabb and the overall offense throughout the interview.

David Aldridge Tries to Get Our Hopes Up About Randy Moss

Randy MossSaturday morning, the top banner on the Inky said something about the Eagles and Randy Moss. The true scope of the teaser wasn’t important — just the fact that “Eagles” and “Moss” were given some primo real estate suggests that maybe there was more than something to it than just a respected columnist’s wishful thinking.

Exit The Freak?

Jevon KearseMichael Klein reports today that overpaid, de-Freaked defensive end Jevon Kearse is putting his house up for sale, which may or may not indicate that his time in Philadelphia is officially done. Neither Kearse’s agent Drew Rosenhaus nor Kearse’s realtor would comment, but the 31-year-old’s Moorestown pad is on the market for a hefty $3.1 million.

The Eagles Examiner, Week 17: The Year of 8-8

1199117263Yesterday, the Philadelphia Eagles capped off their season finale with an inglorious 17-9 victory over the Buffalo Bills, leaving them at 8-8 and out of the playoffs for the 2007 season. However, there are high notes and hope for this team for the next couple seasons — something that had seemingly been lost about Week 10 — and it’d be surprising if the Iggles weren’t back into the mix of the NFC’s elite in 2008.

This year, even though there was nary a cantankerous, franchise-killing receiver in sight, there was still the inevitable mix of controversy and intrigue that follows any unsuccessful Eagles season. Let’s look back at the season that began with so much hope, but imploded early on and never fully recovered.

Does Sheldon Brown Hate Andy Reid?

Sheldon BrownAfter the Saints won on Sunday, Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown told reporters that the team was playing “tight” for a good portion of the season, and said the reason was a byproduct of the coaching staff’s approach. Perhaps a lot of the confusion the remark has generated isn’t about what Brown meant exactly (so far, none of the usual Eagles beat parade members has offered a followup), but why he said it.
