The Sixers Deep-Six A.I. Tribute

Allen IversonThe Philadelphia 76ers are pulling a card out of the Eagles’ hat when it comes to honoring ex-player accomplishments: They won’t.

Sixers chairman Ed Snider has decided not to lay it on for current Denver Nuggets guard Allen Iverson tonight when A.I. returns to Philly for the first time since being traded 15 months ago. There will no video montage or special speeches, only the typical pre-game announcement of opposing players.

Article Reveals More Knicks Horror and Allen Iverson’s Unabashed Affection for Larry Brown’s Mother

Brown and IsiahGranted, the Sixers aren’t having the most memorable season, but the one great takeaway so far is this: They’re not the New York Knicks. The venerable organization’s ongoing publicity nightmare since, oh, Isiah Thomas arrived, has spawned plenty of stories detailing just how horrible it is to be associated with this team in any way. Even the press corps is just miserable.

No wonder, then, that our February article “Larry in Winter”, by Anthony Gargano, — in which the former Sixers (and Knicks!) coach offers even more enlightenment about the depressing atmosphere in Knickerbockerland — has been a goldmine for sports pages everywhere today. (It’s fun and easy to hate the Knicks.) The Times, the N.Y. Post and the N.Y. Daily News all hopped on the Philly Mag story, especially Brown’s claims that there were MSG “spies” everywhere he went.

Perhaps even more interesting, though, might be the piece’s new look at the prickly love/hate relationship between the coach and his most famous student, Allen Iverson:

Is it any wonder that Brown says if he were to write his memoirs, the title would be “I’ve Been Motherfucked 1,200 Times”? Because, he says, he coached Allen Iverson for 600 games, took him out of a game two times, and both times, Iverson called him a motherfucker 600 times.

And, to think, that experience was still 1,000 times better than working for the Knicks.

The Mormons Gush Over Kyle Korver

Kyle KorverPhil Jasner writes about shaggy-haired ex-Sixer three-baller Kyle Korver’s new digs in Utah, and the big-time welcome he received. Korver, arguably the most popular Sixer in town thanks to his Kutcher-like looks and nice-guy persona, was also going to be grossly overpaid as a perimeter guy for the Sixers. Tonight, he’ll face his ex-team in front of his new, enthusiastic home crowd.
