Eagles Address Secondary, Select S Earl Wolff

The Eagles turned their attention to the secondary in the fifth round, drafting N.C. State safety Earl Wolff with the 136th overall pick.

“Very explosive. Can run, can jump. Tough, hard-nosed, physical player,” said Chip Kelly. “When you can add some depth to your secondary it’s always a positive. We held our breath. He was a guy we had targeted higher — a lot higher.”

Wolff himself believed he would be drafted somewhere between rounds 2-4. The 5-11, 209 pounder was a three-year starter and All-ACC selection as a senior.  He ran a 4.44 at the Combine. The former high school running back ranks fifth in school history with 400 tackles — 145 of them coming during his senior season.

“I first saw him at the East-West game. He had a solid week of practice there,” said Mike Mayock, via the Daily News.  ”Guys were talking about him in the fifth or sixth round at the East-West game. Then, at the combine, he ran a 4.4 and jumped 39 inches and really looked athletic and caught the football well.

“If you go back and watch the tape, this kid is a good football player. To most of America, he’s a sleeper. To NFL teams, he’s not.”

The Raeford, North Carolina native actually has some pretty strong local ties. His mom, a member of the Army National Guard, was born and raised in Philly. About 20 family members from North Philly were by his side when he got the call from the Eagles, and bum-rushed him when they heard the news.

“My uncle had on an Eagles hat and my other uncle had on an Eagles shirt [while we were watching the draft],” said Wolff. “I actually have that on right now.”

Wolff had six interceptions over his four years at N.C. State. He was described by his college coaches as physical and explosive. Kelly believes that he can be both an asset in pass coverage and against the run.

“I would say I’m pretty versatile,” said Wolff. “I can play deep middle, I can play deep half, I can play in the box. My senior year I played more in the box because we had some young, inexperienced linebackers.”

Wolff gets added to a safety group that includes Nate Allen, Kurt Coleman, Colt Anderson, Patrick Chung, Kenny Phillips and David Sims.

  • GEagle

his coach called him the heart of the wolf pack defense…allegedly he is a very Skilled ball stripper (8 FF)…6 INTs!!…..we just got a serious PLAYER. might be my favorite Eagles pick in this entire draft!!!! So excited about this kid and Logan!!

    • Richard Colton

Didinger said Logan was a better player on the LSU defense than Barkevious Mingo. Nice pick Joe Banner.

      • GEagle

Lol….there is no Mingo is Benny doesn’t do the dirty work

  • James Skip Carl

Are the Eagles gonna get any extra picks, I wish they would move Avant or Celek

    • GEagle

Don’t think they can move Celek today….it’s too deep of a TE class. Wish we would trade avant RIGHT NOW!!!! love the guy, but he won’t be here when we get back to playoff contention, so trade him to a contender and trade him NOW!!! Lol

still hoping we add safeties dexter McCoil, and Rontez Miles

    • Mostel

Neither Avant nor Celek is going anywhere for a 2013 pick. Maybe they can be moved in July or August for 6ths, etc. Maclin might get us a 2nd if we move him rather than lose him for nothing in free agency.

      • GEagle

Would you take a 6th for Trent cole right now?

Maclin depends..because if they look at next years free agent market, and don’t plan on being active..they could just let him walk and get a high compensatory pick

  • Richard Colton

we missed on SLAY, but picked up a WOLFF

can we add a KRUGER or a RAMBO before the draft is over? need to increase defensive bad-assedness-ratio, which (as everyone knows) is a legit stat.

    • GEagle

It’s the most legit stat of all!! Lol… It’s been a long time since we had players that actually tried to strip recievers of the ball forcing fumbles…this kid Hits hard, he plays fast, jumps high…ferocious Kid…I can’t explain how excited I about this pick….we haven’t added quantity to this defense, but IMO we added some darn good quality…145 tackles is no joke

      • Richard Colton

who is he fighting for a roster spot in year one? Coleman or Colt Anderson?

        • GEagle

Don’t think Coleman will be here

        • Jason N.

I’d keep Anderson, the guy is too beast on special team and no to mention a good locker room present to cut.

Coleman should go, if we have to get rid of someone.

          • Run Eagles Run

anderson is balls out. gotta keep him.

          • GEagle

I don’t he will be cut…chip values ST too much to cut Colt

Curious to see what happens with Sims, because he was a howie acquisition…is howie going to be stubborn with trying to give his guy a chance to work out? Will he give up on someone he just traded for? I would have cut both Kurt and Sims like yesterday….

        • Absecon

Coleman, Anderson, and Sims will be the casualties assuming Phillips will be healthy by the end of training camp…

        • xlGmanlx

          neither, both should be cut

      • geagle

I don’t think Coleman will be here!!!

geez man, the niners just got quinton Dial….wtf. We better friggin get Kruger NOW..

Did anyone draft Luke Marquardt? Serious project, but Jason Peters type athleticism

    • Run Eagles Run

I like how the browns drafted the guy with the coolest name (Barkevious Mingo) and then pretty much no one else as they proceeded to trade away almost all their other picks. If I were them Id just change the team name to “Barkevious Mingo”. I cant stop saying it. Barkevios Mingo. Wtf.

      • Richard Colton

it’s a great football name. shame he’s going to be a bust

      • Cheesesteak

Love that name too….I think it sounds like a character from Star Wars, one of the Sith Lords. Darth Mingo

        • Richard Colton

I find your lack of faith disturbing

        • Run Eagles Run

you hit the nail on the head. Darth Kevios Mingo. Take notes JJ.

    • theycallmerob

got Kruger! glad I stayed sober long enough to see that one

  • Mostel

Can this keep blind, slow, and stupid Chung off of the field please? The horrible safety that allowed Eli to complete that nonsense pass to Manningham to ruin my Superbowl Sunday should not be allowed to be on my team.

    • GEagle

Dude, smile…we just got a stud!!!! this kid should not have lasted til the 5th round. I would have drafted him ahead of Shamarcko and Phillip Thomas

      • Mostel

I know, but you really have no idea about the depth of my hatred of all things New York. Having to hear those tools lord their trophies over us makes me violent!
But I do like the pick.

  • GGEagle

WTF, we need a 6th round pick, BAD if we want any shot at Kruger

    • http://www.facebook.com/todd.orange.1 Todd Orange

      Kruger is who I really wanted…BAD. #fingerscrossed

      • GEagle

We gotta get a pick man!!! Him falling to the 7th is a long shot…I’m nervous as hell.

Ayone know if Luke Marquardt got drafted yet?

      • Richard Colton

he’s there now – if they want him

        • Dominik

And Kruger it is! Seems like a nice pickup for the 7th round.

          • GEagle

And we just got Jordan Poyer!!! Cb/FS

      • Richard Colton

and they did. Holy shit. nice call from 3 hours ago boys.

  • GGEagle

Bellicek just told Mayock…say hi to coach Kelly for me

  • Kg

“Aw man, I liked Coleman and Allen,” said Victor Cruz. Smh

    • GEagle

LOL…I read the first part, I’m like WTF

  • James Skip Carl

True about the compensatory pick and I would take the 6th for Cole. I’m wondering though how a player like Wolff with such production and off the chart athleticism could be rated behind so many other safety’s. I love this pick

    • GEagle

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth…he is healthy. take it, run, and don’t ask no questions..lol JK

Pissed off that the niners got Quinton Dial…if we don’t get a 6th, we have no shot at Kruger!!! Ugh, I’m nervous…Hope we get another safety like Lester, Rambo, or my favorite, Rontez Miles(whoIMO can play both safety positions)

  • http://www.facebook.com/todd.orange.1 Todd Orange

    Please go get Kruger

    • Geagle

With quinton dials gone to SF, Kruger is crucial!!! Soooo nervous right now

    • Run Eagles Run

      good call man.

  • GGEagle

    Lions had a great draft:
    Ziggy
    Slay
Warford, who I friggin Love at guard
devin Taylor who could be a poor mans devin Taylor

I’m so jealous of the Rams…like I really have to start following them. What a draft they had. There defense is viscious…and I won’t be surprised if Bradford becomes good.

The Bengals had an incredible draft

titans, Bears, Vikings, colts all got better…

is anyone else pissed at the draft KC is having? Why the hell couldn’t Andydraft with sense when he was here? Why isn’t he outsmarting himself with these guys that make you say..who?

It’s almost not even fair the draft that teams like the niners, ravens and Seahawks had

    • GEagle

packers and Texans also got better with this draft…Jags……more teams did good, that bad…Jets and Cowboys were pretty bad

If Foles can take care of the ball, and throw 60% completions this year….our offense will put up points..so excited to have a coach who will pound the ball on the goal line, create all kinds of mismatches in the redzone, implement an aggressive special teams, find and exploit mismatches without letting the defense substitute…

can there be a worse feeling for a defense coordinator..to be stuck in a blatant mismatch without getting the chance to substitute? That has to suck! Lol

    • Richard Colton

I’m not as impressed with the Vikings draft as everyone else. Yeah they got great value in Floyd, but you have to consider that they lost a borderline star in Percy Harvin to get that extra #1.

The team that’s swinging for the fences right now and really impressing me is Arizona.

1st: Cooper, best guard in draft
2nd: Kevin Minter – best ILB in draft
3rd: Honey Badger – potential star at safety/return game in best possible situation
4th: Alex Okefor – potential star at DE
4th: Earl Watford – week one starter at guard

      • GEagle

Yeah, the Cardinals def having a smoking draft…I expected them to right the ship with Bruce almighty as there new coach…impressive job they are doing

        • Richard Colton

and they just took Ryan Swope. Never thought I’d say this, but I’m relieved they aren’t in the NFC East anymore. A few drafts in a row like this? man…

          • Geagle

True that…they got a stud in Swope, as long as the concussions don’t kill his career

      • stef08

Earl Watford good to see him drafted high school friend go bulldogs

      • FMWarner

I’m not as impressed with the Vikings’ draft either. They did another Herschel Walker trade for a guy who is a project. Can’t do that.

      • JofreyRice

Agreed, impressed with them, as well. Arizona got a real personnel guy, in Steve Keim. He was a scout for YEARS, grinding out on the road…I’m just saying. I thought another toilet franchise, the Jaguars, had a very good draft as well. I don’t agree with the idea of sticking with Gabbert & Henne, but they are doing it in a way to maximize his chance at success. They are trying to protect him (Joeckel) , as well as give him more electric slot playmakers in Ace Sanders and Denard Robinson. Bradley got his tone-setter in Cyprien and a physical corner from a good UCONN program in Gratz. Building that defense through competent secondary play seems to be the same blueprint from Seattle. Their new GM spent 10 years as an area scout for the Colts.

Of course, impressed with Green Bay, who got what I consider to be 2 of the top 3 backs in the entire draft, and one of my favorite DL, in Datone Jones. They added Micah Hyde at corner, who was a guy I wanted the Eagles to grab, and a high ceiling receiver in Charles Johnson w/very little risk.

        • Geagle

Datone will be one of the best players to come out of this draft…I did like Micah as well. It was disgusting watching round 6 with no draft picks…so much talent was available in that round

  • GEagle

Charlie casserole is talking trash saying we can’t have all these QBs, not enoug reps to develope the. Properly…STFU you fired has been…

    • Charlie Casserole

You STFU you never hired wannabe

      • GEagle

My Richard out of your mouth please…

        • Charlie Casserole

Why is it that it’s fine for you to put down others or call them names, then as soon as someone returns fire you start with the pecker insults? You suffer from two things that can’t be fixed…stupid and small dick syndrome

          • Geagle

se I dont solicit it…I respond to it! Big Difference PAL! You make a backhanded comment to me, for know reason out of the blue, when I never even seen you before, and you are shocked when I throw a Jab back? I dont know if you created this stupid user name after I made my initaial post…but you do realize I was talking about the Real Charlie Casserly right? The former GM, who should be smarter than the terrible analysis he provides?…I have no clue who you are, and yu just pop up talking crap, and you are surprised that I threw a Jab back? lol what world do you live in?………
………..I dont feel the need to disrespect any fellow brothers in green for no reason(with the exception of the braindead dutch, who I actually like but enjoy giving a hard time to)..You wont see me disrespecting anyone else for no reason, unless its a response to there initial classless attack…If you havent noticed, I love talking football, and would much prefer doing so, than having to have this type of convo, with someone who I dont remember ever seeing before….
            ……………………..
Respect, who respect you…its a simple concept..It should be obvious by now that I dont really care and that I have thick skin, so if people feel that the best way to spend there time is to take jabs at me, its not an issue…but dont get like a sensative girl, and start crying when I Jab back….But Im certainly not going to be the one to attack people for no reason. Ill debate football oppinion with anyone, but arguing over a computer with fellow Eagles fans who are strangers to your every day life, cant be the best way to spend time….butt o each his own

  • Max Lightfoot

Might be a great pick. I like what Chip is doing – rebuilding w/players who can likely thrive under his system. So glad we did not take Geno Smith, because we do not need another mobile guy with a huge ego, big ears and thin skin. One D McNabb, despite his wins and massive yardage, is enough to last a lifetime for me. YMMV. Barkley is a reach but he could become very good, if his shoulder is OK. Risky because DEs and DTs just love to shoulder-roll QBs. We shall see in about a year. Go Eags!

  • xlGmanlx

They don’t need to wait, cut coleman immediately.

  • GEagle

We are going to have to try and trade for an OLB

  • Richard Colton

“His mom, a member of the Army National Guard, was born and raised in Philly” – I’m liking this kid more and more

    • Geagle

hear him talk? very impressive young man…yo will quickly find out he is a good kid just by hearing him…his whole family is Eagles fans…spent alot of time here growing up,..
Bennie Logan is real High Charecter too!

  • GEagle

    We drafted Kruger! ! Whoolooooooooooo

  • Cheesesteak

    Mr Wolff! Nice.

If I’m curt with you it’s because time is a factor. I think fast, I talk fast and I need you guys to act fast if you wanna get out of this. So, pretty please… with sugar on top. Clean the fucking car.
