If you’ve ever envied burlesque queen Dita Von Teese’s impossibly tiny waist or swooned over Bettie Page’s sexy style and confidence, you’re not alone. But you don’t have to marry Manson or have the build of a Playboy centerfold to score a burlesque body and the sexy self-assurance that comes with it. Though the tradition of burlesque dates back to the 15th century, it has been revived over the last few years and burlesque troupes and cabarets have been popping up in Philly.
“It’s a great cardio workout,” says Keila Cordova founder of the NoLib’s 954 Dance Movement Collective that’ll be hosting Nicole Carlin of the London POP Fizz Burlesque and her four-week burlesque dance workshop this summer. And thanks to the traditional “bump n’ grind” the age-old art of the tease is so famous for, Cordova says it’ll “work the body parts you’re concerned with when you want to look good in a swim suit”— mainly the glutes and abs.
And don’t think you need to be a toothpick or look like a malnourished model to give it a shot — women of all shapes and sizes love the class.
“Burlesque is all about the feminine body,” says Cordova. “It’s not about hiding your assets, it’s about showing them off.”
