HughE Dillon: David Boreanaz Hits Red Carpet at Kimmel Center

The Kimmel hosted the Philly-raised actor, his wife, actress Carla Gugino and more for the screening of The Mighty Macs, a movie about the Immaculata women's basketball team in the '70s.

Hollywood came to Philly the other night as the Kimmel Center played host to a screening of The Mighty Macs, a movie about the famed Immaculata University women’s basketball team and their legendary coach Cathy Rush, who coached the Immaculata team to consecutive national championships from 1972 to 1974. The film was directed by a Philly guy, Tim Chambers, brother of Penn State basketball coach Pat Chambers. The film’s executive producers are Pat Croce, the former president of the 76ers, and Vince Curran, a successful businessman and former basketball star at Penn. Philadelphia-raised actor David Boreanaz stars.

Below: The 1971-1972 Immaculata women’s basketball team included Coach Cathy Rush (center) with Judy Martinelli (on her left); Theresa Shank Grentz, the 1992 U.S. women’s basketball Olympic coach and former head women’s coach at Rutgers and Illinois; and Marianne Crawford Stanley, former head women’s basketball coach at Old Dominion, whose teams won three national championships.

Below: Joe Weiss, Sharon Pinkenson, executive director of the Philadelphia Film Office, and Mayor Michael Nutter on the red carpet at the screening.

Below: Archbishop Charles Chaput, Carla Gugino, David Boreanaz, Marley Shelton and Tim Chambers. In the movie, Carla, who plays Cathy Rush, is blond, which made me question whether this brunette beauty was her when she walked the carpet. Shortly after this shot, Chaput had a moment alone with Boreanaz where he gave him a blessing. Then Boreanaz turned to his wife, who was just off to the left and shared a romantic kiss with her. (The Bones star confessed he had cheated on his wife, Jaime Bergman, with Tiger Woods’s alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel last year, and recently admitted the affair actually made his marriage better, because the couple fought to save their relationship. Last week an online cheating website offered him $250,000 to be the spokesperson for their site, which also says affairs strengthen marriages. No word on whether he got back to them.)

Below: David and wife, with his parents, Patti Boreanaz and Dave Roberts. Dave Roberts was the beloved weather man on 6 ABC for more than 26 years until his retirement in 2009. Also on hand for the special night was his sidekick at the 6 ABC anchor desk, Jim Gardner, and his wife, Amy.

Below: Brandon Hannan and Tisha Tinsman play mother and son in The Mighty Macs. (Tony Luke, Jr. played the husband/dad.) Tisha Tinsman also appeared in The Red Corvette, which was screening the same night at the Franklin Institute.

Below: Shy, unassuming Bianka Brunson plays Gayle Moore, one of the basketball players. The movie was shot at the Hill School in Pottstown.

Below: I guess when you are ABC’s Secret Millionaire you can go just about anywhere. James Malinchak was on the red carpet, too. I couldn’t find out why, but I do have to commend him for bringing along a piece of paper with his name and title on it, making it easier for the photographers to ID him.

Below: After the movie, there was a ’70s disco party held in the the Kimmel’s Commonwealth Plaza until 1 a.m., with DJ Eddie Tully spinning.

Below: Jennifer Schloder and Tony Luke, Jr. I completely forgot to ask Tony about the movie and immediately wanted to know about his weight-loss program. It’s simple, he says, eat healthier and work out. Doesn’t he look great with his 90-pound weight loss? Very inspirational, especially since he has the best pork sandwiches in town.

Below: Guests at the party included Mickey and Dave Coskey. Coskey used to work for Pat Croce as executive vice president of the 76ers, went on to the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, and this past spring left that position and purchased five Atlantic Broadcasting stations.

Below: Jin Hee Park, State Senator Larry Farnese, and Ledia Leka. Last week, Farnese introduced Senate Bill 886 to allow in-state and out-of-state licensed producers, suppliers, importers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers that obtain a direct wine shipping license to mail 18 liters, or two cases, a month to Pennsylvania homes and businesses.

Below: George F. Schools and Lil Nicolette enjoy the sounds of the ’70s. I was enjoying their fashion. Also spotted at the party were WMMR’s Kathy Romano, who is also in the film, Lianda Swain, Flyers James van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux, who are friends with Boreanaz, Mary Dougherty and husband, Erik Neumann, who were celebrating their 23rd wedding anniversary, and Phil Martelli, Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team (his wife, Judy, was an original Mighty Mac). The film opens Friday, October 21st.
