Eagles Wake-Up Call: Matt Barkley Faces New Challenges

Matt Barkley conceded that Wednesday’s outing was “a little rough.” There were some obvious growing pains as Chip Kelly had the offense working on the two-minute drill and red-zone situations.

More Barkley passes seem to be hitting the ground now compared to earlier in the camp when the team was still in shorts.

The fourth-round pick is working uphill as he fights for the starting job against Nick Foles and Michael Vick. Even more so perhaps because he is working with less talented skill position players overall.

Barkley was asked: Is it difficult to show your best if you don’t get a chance to run with the top dogs in practice?

“I think at times it is,” Barkley said.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Cosell On Barkley, Wolff

Greg Cosell of NFL Films recently joined Doug Farrar’s Shutdown Corner podcast to review the drafts of all four NFC East teams.

Cosell talked about several of the Eagles’ rookies, including fourth-round pick Matt Barkley. During the pre-draft process, he questioned Barkley’s arm strength, but Cosell identified another issue with the Eagles’ rookie.

“A bigger concern I had with Barkley when I watched him on film… I did not think he had really quick feet,” Cosell said. “And that bothered me almost as much, if not more, than the fact that he doesn’t have a great arm. Everybody knows that. But I didn’t think he had really quick feet. And I think that that’s a hindrance because I think in this league, especially if you don’t have a big arm, you need to have explosive lower body movement, and I didn’t see that with Matt Barkley.”

Matt Barkley: I’m Part Of Quarterback Competition

The quarterback competition in Philadelphia is generally viewed as a two-man race between Michael Vick and Nick Foles. Clearly, those are the two that start the competition out in front. But lurking not far out of focus is Matt Barkley. He is gunning for the starting gig, and has not been told that it is off limits.

“I don’t think it matters how I see it, just that I’m in it,” said Barkley. “That’s all that matters. Coaches have said that [the open competition] is kind of there, and I’ve got to do everything to prove to the coaches that it’s mine.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Where the Rookies Stand Going Into Camp

In exactly two weeks, the rookies will report to NovaCare to kick off Eagles training camp. July 22 is the report date, then they’ll practice for each of the next two days before the vets show up on the 25th.

With the rooks up first, let’s take a look at where the 2013 draft picks stand heading into camp.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: More Love For Matt Barkley

Matt Barkley spent last week in Ohio at the NFL’s Rookie Symposium with the rest of the Eagles’ first-year players.

With his remaining time off, he’ll be getting married before returning to Philadelphia on July 22 when rookies report for training camp.

During the spring, Barkley’s reps came with the third team, but he drew praise from Chip Kelly for his work ethic and ability to pick up the offense.

And Barkley continues to be a popular subject of discussion nationally.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Kelly On the Read Option

During Chip Kelly’s final media session last week, a reporter posed the following question:

There’s always been talk about whether the option will work in the NFL. You seem to be running quite a bit of it. Is that a fallacy…?

Kelly interrupted. “Is it a fallacy that we run quite a bit of it?” he said. “Yes.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: A Cowboys Slant On the Draft

In the weeks leading up to the draft, Howie Roseman loves talking about the board.

It’s all about setting the board, analyzing the board and staying true to the board. Spend months ranking the players, form some kind of consensus, and making final decisions during draft weekend should be relatively simple.

Of course, reporters and fans have never been privy to the Eagles’ board.

But this year, once again, we get to see how one team had its players ranked.

Jerry Jones gave interviews in front of the Cowboys’ draft board, and the writers at BloggingTheBoys.com were able to cobble together a complete picture of how Dallas had its prospects ranked.

So, what did Jones and company think of the players the Eagles ended up landing?

Eagles Coaches High On Matt Barkley

Since Chip Kelly took the Eagles head coaching job, it’s been heavily debated: just what is he looking for in a quarterback? So we asked his quarterbacks coach, Bill Lazor, to name the main qualities they seek in a signal-caller.

“Accuracy and decision-making,” said Lazor without hesitation.

Later in the conversation, he was asked to assess Matt Barkley.

“From the moment he’s walked on the field here he has been accurate, and that’s the No. 1 thing. Accuracy and decision making. He’s been decisive and accurate,” he said. “I feel like the way we evaluated him so far — without having played a game — has proven to be true.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Barkley Showing Some Early Command

The quarterbacks were at the far end of the field, going through mobility drills while the special team units got some work in on the main stretch of grass. The song booming from the giant speakers at this moment was “Electric Feel (Justice Remix)” by MGMT, a techno-ey dance joint. And there was Matt Barkley, bobbing along to the beat in between reps.

“You have to have a groove out there,” Barkley said with a smile.

Given that it’s just the second week, the rookie seems to be pretty loose and comfortable in his surroundings.
