Amish Get to Opt Out of Obamacare

Lucky them?

This is from a few days ago, but caught our attention. Why? Because the headline features AMISH and OBAMACARE, The two most polarizing topics in 21st century America. Here’s the rub: The Amish have been allowed to opt out of the law’s individual mandate to buy health insurance.

“A little-known provision of the law with its roots in a 1950s battle over Social Security exempts [Mennonite and Amish communities] from the individual mandate, an element of the Affordable Care Act that requires most Americans to purchase health insurance by January or face tax penalties.”

Of course the Amish are exempt from the mandate because of a “little-known” 60-year-old provision. Why can’t the rest of you be exempt? Because the Amish already have a functioning health care system of their own.

“While practices vary by community, most Amish fund their health care through a system that merges church aid, benefit auctions and negotiated discounts with local hospitals, promising quick cash payment in exchange for lower rates.”

    Any smart person would.

So, if you want to replicate their plan, will you be told no? Why can’t a Methodist d the same?

  • Keef Wivaneff

I think allowing the Amish (or the Ku Klux Klan, Hell’s Angels, Tea party!..) to opt out is a bad idea.
Medicare in Australia, National health in UK work well because they are universal.
    Everyone contributes, everyone is covered.
    (OMG..that sounds like SOCIALISM…quelle horreur!)

“For Profit” Healthcare such as you have in America is unaffordable for many and the Insurance companies are prone to using dirty tricks to refuse payment.

    I admire this man’s stoicism

    He certainly has BALLS.

Hahaha, everyone contributes… what about those scum sucking leeches bleeding the welfare system dry? Who’s contributing for them? Oh that’s right, we are… the ones with jobs… the ones struggling to live paycheck to paycheck… the ones too “well off” for Government assistance or too proud to ask for it… that’s such a good idea, let’s give poor people free stuff to the point where they make more on free handouts than they would with an actual job. Not to mention all of the people who have jobs that will have reduced hours so their employers can duck out on providing health insurance.

      • Keef Wivaneff

“Scum sucking leeches” well that’s one point of view!
Be sure to wipe that dummy before you put it back in your mouth.

In Australia, UK and many other western democracies we have free health care for everyone. Those systems have been in place for decades and the sky has not fallen in so far.

If someone has an accident and needs micro-surgery to reattach their fingers they are not told that payments will only cover two fingers and they will have to choose which ones.
If they develop a chronic illness they will continue to receive care for the remainder of their life and will not be thrown out of the private health fund.

You have free public education. Should that be denied to the “scum sucking leeches” as well?

I’m of the baby boomer generation and it was certainly true that up until the early 80s there was no excuse for anyone to be unemployed. There was work for anyone that wanted it.
That started to change from the 80s on.
Manual workers were replaced by automation. Clerical jobs were replaced by computers.
Nowadays even the checkout chick has been largely replaced by scanners and self service checkouts.

By now we were all supposed to enjoy a 20 hour working week and spend our spare time at the beach or playing golf.

Oh wait…… lot’s of folks do live like that.
        They’re called COMPANY EXECUTIVES.
“Scum sucking leeches”? Don’t get me started!

This was clearly written by someone who has no idea what the Amish are. They aren’t members of the larger society, and prefer to remain apart from it. The rest of us are “Americans” – the Amish just live here. Calling them the KKK, which are made up of members of the larger society, is just simply false. It’s also extremely religiously intolerant and quite bigoted, if you ask me — shame on you.

      • Keef Wivaneff

Irony is clearly wasted on you guys.

        Are the Amish not Americans?
        Are the KKK not Americans?

Can you point me to where I called the Amish KKK?

(What is it with you guys? Is it the edyerkatshunsystem? is it genetics?)

  • Boodock

I also heard illegal immigrants that can live here for free and get a free check and foodstamps do not have to get the healthcare… Anyone else know anything about this?

    • Jack

and they aren’t required to have an ID to vote….

  • TheHabMan

This is the only “Amish” picture you could find?

    • woosha

Amish dont like to have their picture I can see why they used a picture of the fakest amish in america…I live 1 mile down the road from lebanon levi and know the amish community in my town. Him and his show is a pure disgrace to what the amsih are really about..he’s made a mockery of his people.
