The Nach Attack: The Year in Philly TV

With the new year only just begun, there’s still time for a quick look back at the year 2007 in Philly television.

Alycia LaneAlycia Lane …

Larry Kane Trashes Local News So We Don’t Have To

Larry KaneVenerable Philadelphia newsman Larry Kane has worked in the business for close to 40 years. Though no longer an anchorman, he finally has the freedom to analyze and critique issues thanks to his CN8 show, The Voice of Reason, and a growing web presence thanks to his “Larry Kane Report” on LarryKane.com. Kane graciously spoke with the Daily Examiner about why local television news is dying, whether it even has a place in today’s society, and how aspiring anchorpeople should, ahem, behave once they climb behind the desk five nights a week.

The Nach Attack: Ringing in the New

FireworksFirst, CBS 3 poached Larry Mendte, Kathy Orr, Doug Kammerer and Lisa Mishler from NBC 10. Now the station is stealing the New Year’s Eve Penns Landing fireworks display: Mendte and Alycia Lane co-host, Kathy Orr reports. Of course, both NBC 10 and CBS 3 combined won’t have the ratings of “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” that will be broadcast on 6 ABC.

Foreigner (“Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded”) headlines the CN8 New Year’s Eve special this year. This incarnation of the group does not include original lead singer Lou Gramm. (You think CN8 is going to get Lou Gramm?)

The Nach Attack: NBC 10 Muffs 11 p.m. Sweeps

Jim GardnerWhile 6 ABC and CBS 3 battled for first place at 11 p.m. during this November sweeps race, NBC 10, with no help from its dreadful prime-time lineup, limped into third place.

As of Tuesday morning (sweeps ends tonight), 6 ABC’s 11 p.m. newscast (Jim Gardner, Cecily Tynan and Gary Papa) leads with an 8 rating/16 share. (Each rating point is equivalent to around 29,000 households, and ratings are rounded to the nearest number.) CBS 3 (Larry Mendte, Alycia Lane, Kathy Orr, and Beasley Reece) is close behind with an 8 rating/15 share. NBC 10 (Tim Lake, Renee Chenault Fattah, Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz, and Vai Sikahema) is third with a 5 rating/10 share.

The Nach Attack: Philadelphia’s TV Turkeys of the Year

Happy Thanksgiving!

You Can’t Go Home Again: Levittown’s Susan Barnett lost her CBS 3 weekday morning anchor position to Liz Keptner, and Philadelphia native Clayton Morris lost his weekday morning anchor position to John Anderson on Fox 29’s Good Day Philadelphia.

“The Ring 6”: 6 ABC anchor Monica Malpass was sued by a former fiancé for not returning an engagement ring.

Winter Storm: After learning that he’ll be replaced by John Bolaris, Fox 29 meteorologist Rob Guarino dissed his replacement on his blog — and then removed that part of the post a short time later.

Lori Wilson Muffs It: More people have probably seen Wilson’s vocabulary malfunction on YouTube than her show on NBC 10.
