What is your teaching or educational philosophy?

We are committed to cultivating an environment where all members of the Shipley community are engaged, feel respected and valued, grow as individuals, strive for excellence, and have the opportunity to do their best work. We honor and value all people and are committed to being a safe and inclusive environment.

We practice student-centered teaching to engage students, nurture meaningful relationships, and promote educational excellence. We see students as active learners and encourage them to develop metacognitive and critical thinking skills as they engage with complex ideas. At all points in a student’s development, we aim to balance rigor with individualized attention. Students are challenged to understand how ideas overlap across academic disciplines in order to make sense of the complexity of today’s world. Our goal is to help students discover their passions as learners, take ownership of their learning process, and express themselves as learners through multiple modalities.

Lastly, we embrace the whole child and the cultivation of well-being through our commitment to incorporating the skills of human flourishing into our curriculum.

What is your mission statement?

The Shipley School is an independent, coeducational day school in Bryn Mawr for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students. Through our commitment to educational excellence, we develop within each student a love of learning and a desire for compassionate participation in the world.

Through a strong college-preparatory curriculum in the humanities and sciences, our school encourages curiosity, creativity, and respect for intellectual effort. Shipley upholds and promotes moral integrity, a sense of personal achievement and worth, and concern for others at school and in the larger community.
