The kitchen at this Headhouse Square spot doesn't rely on the standard tricks to make great Mexican food. Oh, you'll get your Mexican fix at Xochitl (pronounce "so-cheet"), but it comes through slow cooking, deep spices and layered flavors. The bar works just as hard, with a menu that's much more than margaritas (though we love those, too).

I was taken to xochitl on my first date with my fiancee. We considered the experience to be pleasant. Upon return, it had changed completely. We arrived in a group of four. We were restricted from the only open, unreserved table in the establishment, despite the fact that members in our party, including myself, were planning on ordering food. The hostess explained that the table was saved for more "suitable" customers, which I found insulting. forced to eat large plates at a bar lounge, the food was extremely flat and salty. The bartender was prone to error on three occasions throughout the night and charged us unnecessarily at the end of the night. The margaritas were watery, the sangria almost flavorless. Would not suggest this restaurant to anyone.

I was at this restaurant this past saturday and i was advised to go there from some friends. They know that I am one of the best food critics they know. I had heard about the margaritas. My first margarita was a cabo wabo, it was weak and watery, loaded with ice. Just a few sips (initially) from the straw and it was about gone. The next one was a Don julio. It was too strong and overpowering. The ingredients and the drinks as they came out were inconsistent. We had a waitress that looked,"unkempt" and pretended that she knew about tequila. The inconsistent Margaritas were a downer. The food was a sampler platter and it was nothing spectacular. It was very plain in all of its simple glory with nothing special on this plate(for two). The mexican man that prepared our Guac.was very nice and professional but the guac.was mediocre at best.(Bland), although fresh. I think the best thing about the restaurant was the tall, delicious statuesque Latvian beauty that was one of the hostesses. The place was very neat, clean and quaint. The tables and silverware were cold(nice) and clean. People do notice this, especially the glasses, which were clean.
