Folks were buzzing about Carol when it screened a few months ago at the Philadelphia Film Festival, but those of us who missed it have been champing at the bit for it to finally open in Philly theaters. Our wait comes to an end next Friday, when it opens at Ritz East.
Don’t want to wait that long? You’re in luck! We’ve been given 25 pairs of tickets for an early screening that’s taking place on Monday, December 21st at Ritz at the Bourse at 7:30 pm. In case you’re not keeping track, Carol dominates this year’s Golden Globes nominees with five nominations, including Best Motion Picture and Best Actress for its stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. You can be sure just as many Oscar nods will soon follow.
Shot in gorgeous 16mm by Director Todd Haynes, the film is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt. Here’s what Ticket film critic Piers Marchant said about it when he recommended the film in October:
Haynes new film stars Rooney Mara as the young, slightly mousey Therese, a counterperson at a fictional New York department store in the early ‘50s, and the brilliant Cate Blanchett as the titular older debutante woman with whom she falls desperately in love. Haynes pitches his story as a romance, but one in which we are genuinely worried for our protagonist’s emotional care. Carol is many engaging things, but there’s the nagging sense that she’s simply not going to be good for Therese, no matter how much the latter may hope otherwise. Strong performances and a provocative undercurrent — Carol’s ex-husband tries to invoke a moral condemnation clause in their protracted custody battle over their daughter — power the film to fascinating heights.
