After being without a chief curator for more than a year following Judith Dolkart’s move to the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Barnes Foundation has chosen Sylvie Patry as its new chief curator and deputy director for collections and exhibitions. She will begin the position in January 2016. Patry comes to Philadelphia after serving as the chief curator of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

She was educated at the Sorbonne and the Institut National du Patrimoine in Paris. Her professional resumé includes helping curate international exhibitions — including wrangling works from Renoir and Monet — lecturing on French painting from the 19th century, and teaching at the Ecole du Louvre. Recently, she helped organize an exhibition on Impressionist champion Paul Durand-Ruel, which was featured in Paris and London, and later at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Patry told The New York Times that she believes the Barnes is interesting from a curator’s perspective because it is “a collection that is known but not so well known.” The Foundation hopes to utilize her extensive experience to expand their educational programs and curatorial efforts.
