Richard Gere to Honor Absent Dalai Lama at Liberty Medal Ceremony

The Dalai Lama was supposed to come to Philadelphia at the end of this month to receive the National Constitution Center‘s 2015 Liberty Medal. A few weeks before his arrival, however, we got the bummer news that the 80-year-old spiritual leader had to cancel to fulfill a doctor’s orders to rest up for a few weeks.

The news forced local Tibetan organizations to nix a couple much-anticipated speaking engagements hosted by His Holiness, but the National Constitution Center is moving ahead with its Liberty Medal Ceremony on October 26th. They’ve even nabbed an extra bit of star power to keep people interested in going.

The Center released news today that Philly-born actor/philanthropist Richard Gere will participate in the presentation on October 26th. He will be on hand for remarks before the medal is presented to the Dalai Lama via his translator Dr. Thupten Jinpa and Dr. Richie Davidson, founder and chair of the Mind and Life Institute.

The Liberty Medal Ceremony will take place at 5 pm on Monday, October 26th at the National Constitution Center. If you can’t make it, the event will be broadcast on 6ABC.
