The concept sounds way cool: a Cirque du Soleil show based on James Cameron’s film Avatar. It’s called Toruk: The First Flight, and it’s making its area premiere … in Allentown, of all places.

In fact, when Toruk hits Allentown’s PPL Center on December 4th through the 6th of this year, it will be the first time a Cirque show will play the Pennsylvania town. Even more interesting, Allentown will be the third city to see the Cameron-inspired production, which opens in Lafayette, Louisiana, and makes a pitstop in Richmond, Virginia, before heading to our area.

According to the Cirque folks, the show, which is the franchise’s 37th production, “envisions a world beyond imagination set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film. The word Toruk, in the Na’vi language, refers to the great leonopteryx, the mighty red and orange predator that rules the Pandoran sky. Central in Na’vi lore and culture, this fascinating creature is crucial to the Na’vi clans’ sense of destiny and interconnectedness – and is about to be ridden for the very first time by a Na’vi.”

Tickets to the Allentown engagement go on sale to the general public on August 7th at 10 am, but Cirque Club members get a chance to score tickets on August 3rd. For more information, visit their website.
