Clive Barker—creator of creepy film franchises Hellraiser and Candyman—has a pre-Halloween treat for Philadelphia in his latest theatrical work Crazyface, which makes its Philly premiere this week courtesy of BrainSpunk Theater. The dark satire follows Tyl Eulenspiegel (Crazyface) and his family as they travel across Europe. Along the way, Tyl stumbles upon a magical box that he takes with him on his journey. As you can probably imagine, this complicates things a little. Suddenly Tyl finds himself tracked by three spies, a brother who wants to kill him, and madness just ensues all over the place. It's something exciting for the stage during this slowish local-theater summer. Don't miss it. Through August 24th, various times, $25, Christ Church Neighborhood House, 20 North American Street.
Get a sneak peak at the 2014 Fringe Festival before it begins, every Monday evening in August at FringeArt's Scratch Night. Neighborhood Fringe artists will perform excerpts from their shows before they hit the festival. Tonight, you can catch Susan Chase, RealLivePeople, RHolt Productions, Philadelphia Artists’ Collective, and New Street Dance Group. Admission, and beer (!), is free. Philadelphia Weekly's 24th annual Concerts in the Park kicks off Wednesday with an evening of free jams in Rittenhouse. The aim of the event is to showcase "acclaimed and emerging artists on today’s breaking music scene." This week's lineup includes DJ Lisa Love, Katie Frank and the Pheromones (pictured), and Divers. Next week, look out for DJ Cash Money, Worldtown Soundsystem, and Pablo Batista and the Mambo Syndicate. Wednesday, August 13th, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., free, Rittenhouse Square Park, 18th and Walnut streets.
From Foobooz: Amis is hosting a Victory Brewing beer dinner. The four-course beer-centric feast is $65 and includes beer pairings with each course. Chef Brad Spence and his executive sous chef, Ned Maddock have created a menu focusing on the beer, barley and hops of Victory as an essential part of each dish. Wednesday, August 13th. More here.
Nerd Nite Philadelphia invites you to get geeky at Frankford Hall this Wednesday night. The city’s brainiest folk will gather to enlighten you about controversial librarians, enhancement drugs, and why size isn’t all that matters. There will be “nerdy video game inspired tunes” to enjoy in between intelligent musings. If you start feeling too highbrow, the slightly uncouth liters of beer swilling about will bring you back down to Earth. Get there early, as seats fill up fast. More information is available here. Check out the best new talent emerging from the Philly music scene at the Kimmel Center’s free, monthly jam session: Sittin’ In. The night will kick off with tunes from resident DJ Matthew Law aka DJ PHSH. Philly native, writer, and musician Ursula Rucker (pictured)—who has collaborated on over 50 songs with artists like The Roots—will host the jam session, sharing some of her powerful poetry with the crowd. Doors will open at 8 p.m. to the stylings of the DJ, with live music following at 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 13th, 8 p.m., Commonwealth Plaza at the Kimmel Center, 300. S. Broad Street.
A little saxophone and some cocktails never hurt anybody. Get your smooth jazz on this Thursday evening at Franklin Square, with a family-friendly lineup of live jazz performances. Hot Night, Cool Jazz promises great tunes, beer and wine for the adults, and crafts and carousel rides for the littles. Admission to the performance is free. Dancing encouraged.
