The entire city is making this a Beer Week to remember, with dozens of events going on across the city through June 8th. Some standouts this week include an all-day $2 Tuesday at Fox & Hound, and a sit down with the master Founders Brewers at Jose Pistola's to talk hops. But the craziest, can't-miss event? Marc Summers, host of the old game show Double Dare, will be at Frankford Hall for Dunkel Dare. (Think the old game show, but with beer). Also, look out for the Philly Beer Week Garden which will be open all week, with new beers and musical acts each night. The 20th annual AIDS Education Month kicks off with a free reception and awards ceremony that honors individuals who stand out as exemplars in the community of those fighting for the rights of people with HIV. This year the award will be presented to Francoise Barre-Sinoussi (pictured), PhD and recipient of a Nobel Prize in medicine. Hors d'oeuvres and meaningful conversation is free for all in attendance. The beloved musical Wizard of Oz is getting the stage treatment in Andrew Lloyd Weber's newest production, which opens this week at the Kimmel Center. Rediscover Dorothy and the rest of her friends as she sings her way down the yellow brick road. A few new songs and surprises are in store to make this trip back to Oz unlike any other. Opens June 3rd, 7:30 p.m., $20-$100, Kimmel Center, 300 South Broad Street.
Want to be the one who saw them before they were cool? Head upstairs at World Cafe Live for a free showcase of local talent looking to make it big. Hosted by Bruce Torres, Philly Rising is a weekly event that features a diverse group of artists, so you're sure to find one you groove with. Tuesday, June 3rd, 8 p.m., World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut Street.
The Morris Arboretum is the perfect backdrop for these summer night yoga sessions. Led by one of the city's premier instructors, participants can learn the basics while finding relaxation in the surrounding environment. All are welcome for this unique experience that is sure to increase your energy and reduce stress. Sessions will run for ten weeks. June 3rd, 8:15 p.m., $25 per session, Morris Arboretum, 100 E. From Be Well Philly: On Wednesday and Thursday, Be Well Philly will be popping up in the rotunda at the Shops at Liberty Place with a few express workouts during your lunch break. Our friends at Red Hot Dance Fitness will lead a get-you-moving dance-fitness class on June 4th from noon to 12:30, and the folks from Yoga Garden will host a super fun, bring-your-own-mat yoga class from noon to 12:30 on June 5th. That’s right—you’ve got two opportunities to get your midday sweat on. More info here.
The annual Center City Districts Sips event (running from June 4th until August 27th) brings with it some of the best happy hour deals around. Bars across Philly will be featuring $5 cocktails, $4 wine, $3 beer and half-priced appetizers from 5 to 7 p.m. Each participating restaurant will offer unique food and drink specials in honor of the event. Brooklyn-based Streets of Laredo describe themselves as "an indie-folk band of joy" and one listen to their music makes that abundantly clear. Complete with long hair, mustaches and hats, these New Yorkers' sunshine-rock may seem cliche, but their infectious sound will have skeptics tapping their feet.
