Of the four county seats surrounding Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, Doylestown strikes the best balance between small-town charm and urbane class. The many historic houses and office buildings in the heart of the borough have been lovingly maintained and updated through the years, and some of them offer living space you can rent.

And if living in history isn’t quite your cup of tea, Doylestown offers newer houses and apartments too. Many of these have as much charm and style as their older counterparts, and they too have gotten updates over the years. Here are five examples of what we’re talking about.

141 Shewell Ave. (above) | 4 beds, 3 baths, 4,225 square feet, $3,900 per month. Contact leasing agent about pet policy.

At the top of our list is this roomy, handsome stone Tudor. Built in 1941 and just down the block from Bucks County’s new justice center, it’s been updated and expanded with several attractive features. These include: A roomy kitchen with sleek modern appliances and an island with marble and butcher-block counters. A charming breakfast nook in the bay window off the kitchen. A new first-floor master bedroom with skylights, huge windows, and sliding doors that open onto the attractively landscaped backyard and rear terrace. An elegant dining room and a working fireplace in the living room. A slate-paved sunroom. Laundry facilities on the main floor and in the basement. And all the good things downtown Doylestown has to offer just steps from your front door. But wait! There’s one more thing you will appreciate: The solar panels on its roof that will save on your electric bill.

Prospective tenants must supply their credit report and a criminal background check along with their application.

This 1960s rancher is ideal for tenants with disabilities, as it offers fully wheelchair-accessible single-floor living. It also offers a great live/work setup thanks to a separate entrance for its den, which has its own half bath and can be used as a home office. This house also has a newer master suite attached to its back; it has a full bathroom, and wheelchair users can use the full hall bathroom nearby.
