“Crestlea” has been the house “on top of the hill” since it was built in 1907 for Dr. Joseph M. Reeves. When chemical heiress Eluthera du Pont lived here, the home served as a hub of social life on the Main Line. You now have the opportunity to make this hilltop home your own social hub, personal refuge, or whatever you want it to be.

It’s a splendid specimen of that Main Line mainstay, the center-hall Colonial. And this one has a particularly impressive center hall. It boasts a soaring two-story-high stairwell accented by wainscoting and a Palladian window and a wood-burning fireplace with a green marble surround and elegant wood mantle.

Off to one side of the center hall is a handsome little office with a gas fireplace and views of the valley and creek below. The living room on the other side features its own ornate wood-burning fireplace and French doors that open onto a south-facing porch with its own private yard.

The dining room has especially elaborate crown molding and large windows that let in the morning light, and the kitchen includes a breakfast nook that’s similarly sunny. An elevator and back stairs connect the kitchen to the upper floors.

The master suite on the second floor includes a spacious walk-in closet, a master bath with dual vanities, soaking tub and sit-down shower, and separate entrances for each room so you don’t have to disturb your sleeping partner. Three other bedrooms, one with its own bath and two with a shared one, a laundry room and two maid’s rooms round out this floor.

The top floor was where Eluthera du Pont did her entertaining. The huge ballroom now serves as a billiards and recreation room; a door leads from it to a balcony over the front portico that offers sweeping views of the surrounding grounds. A bedroom with en suite bath and a storage room can also be found on this floor.

The sloping 1.2-acre lot contains a variety of beautifully landscaped spaces that match any mood, including a picturesque stone bridge over the creek.

Should you feel the need to leave all this, the Main Line’s liveliest Main Street is a short drive away. There you can shop, dine, and catch SEPTA Regional Rail trains to Center City.
