City House of the Week: “Urban Warehouse” Residence in Society Hill

It's designed to appear as three separate buildings combined into one.

Designed by Philadelphia architect Reed Axelrod, Society Hill’s “Urban Warehouse,” as the listing christens it, is one of those rare homes whose construction piques the curiosity of observant passersby unable to settle on its function. In this case, the single residence, built from the ground up on a formerly vacant lot circa 1995, was made to appear as though it were three separate buildings combined into one.

Inside, the Addison Street jewel is just as astounding, but not for ambiguous reasons. Rather, it vaunts such features as wide-plank pine floors, sky-lit spaces, and mezzanine overlooks. Its towering Great room rises up to 25 feet, has exposed timber framing, and is the site of a wood-burning stone fireplace. Also on the premises is a 29-foot terrace overlooking the manicured garden patio and small waterfall.

All of the aforementioned details, however, fail to raise our interest as much as the main bedroom’s double master bathroom. We reached out to listing agent Laurie Phillips to see what that entailed, to which she explained the room consists of “two sides with a shower in between; one [side] comes with a tub, toilet, and sink; the other, sink and toilet.” Aside from its three sleeping quarters, the home has a family room, two studies, fitness room, and a ground level guest space with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms.
