Wedding-Day Lingerie: What to Wear Underneath the Dress

I have long espoused the notion that the better your undergarments make you look in your clothes, the uglier said undergarments are. An unlined, wireless, dotted lace triangle bra is no doubt gorg when you’re standing in your bathroom applying your lipstick and curling your hair, but it’s going to do nothing for you in a fitted top. Spanx, on the other hand? There’s no spin you can put on any style of ’em to present them as pretty, but Lord if they don’t make your butt kick butt in that mini.

The same basic theory applies to what you’ll wear on your wedding day. (Your wedding night, well, that’s another story.) Don’t worry about what those undergarments look like on their own—all that matters is what they do for you once your ‘maids have strapped you into the Dress, and as per my aforementioned rule of General Lingerie Prettiness vs. Effectiveness, you’re going to need to save all of those colorful, lacy, stringy, frilly numbers you’ve had your eye on for your honeymoon.

That’s why I loved this post from Colin Cowie Weddings on wedding-day lingerie, and why brides need to read it! It’s got great tips on what you need to think about when it comes to selecting what you’ll wear underneath your wedding dress, and things to consider concerning your dress in particular when it comes to what you’ll wear both on top and on bottom. And remember: You’ve got to wear your wedding-day undergarments when you see your seamstress for your first fitting.

Another little tip I’ll throw in there, after years of chatting with both lingerie experts and bridal salon owners: At least anecdotally from all my scientific research, it seems that the Le Mystere bridal bustier is by far and away the most popular choice, with its seamlessness and perfect combo of lift and smoothing. And it’s not even ugly! Here’s where you can get it around you.
