Philly Mag Announces New Editor Kate Dailey
Dailey, an Oreland native, brings experience at Vox.com, the BBC and Newsweek to the magazine’s top editorial role.
In an email to staff this morning, Chris Vogel, chief content officer of Metrocorp, the parent company of Philadelphia and Boston magazines, announced that Kate Dailey will become the next editor of Philly Mag.
Dailey, a native of Oreland, comes immediately from Vox.com, where she had served as managing editor since 2017. Along with working to set strategic initiatives, develop a supporting newsroom culture, and establish a grant program to fund ambitious journalism projects, Dailey notably built an editorial fellowship focused on identifying and training diverse talent. The fellowship was adopted across Vox Media.
Prior to Vox, Dailey was digital planning editor at BBC News’s Washington bureau; she was previously a senior magazine writer for the BBC. She has also worked for Newsweek, Men’s Health, Women’s Health and The Dubliner Magazine.
Dailey is an alum of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Penn State University, and Springfield Township High School.
“I’ve been reading Philadelphia since I was a kid,” said Dailey. “It’s what made me want to be a journalist. The idea that I can bring all of the skills I’ve acquired during my career — service journalism, features editing, digital strategy — and put them to work in my hometown is so exciting. Twelve-year-old me wouldn’t believe it. I’m thrilled to lead such a talented team as we continue the tradition of excellence at the magazine — while working together to forge a new path, find new audiences and showcase new voices.”
Dailey will become the first woman to hold the top editor position at the magazine.
“Kate is a proven story editor and a top-flight journalist with an inquisitive mind and the right experience to take the helm one of America’s finest city magazines,” said Metrocorp CEO Nick Fischer. “This is an exciting watershed moment in the history of Philadelphia magazine.”
Dailey will begin her new role on October 26th.
