Philly Schools to Close Early Thursday Due to Heat

Philly schools will close early on Thursday.

The School District of Philadelphia has extended this week’s heat-related early dismissals to Thursday.

Public schools first announced on Monday that they would close at 1 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday amid a heat advisory that has brought heat index values up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit. That advisory ends at 8 p.m. on Wednesday night, but the school district will close early on Thursday as well.

Three days of early dismissals are probably enough for the parents and teachers opposed to the school district’s pre-Labor Day start to say, “I told you so.”

Students, congrats: You now have three extra half-days of vacation. Unfortunately, you probably won’t want to spend them outside.

Bad news for teachers and other employees: You’re still expected to remain for the normal work day, and administrative offices will operate on regular business hours.

Here’s the full statement from the school district:

Due to the high temperatures forecasted, all School District of Philadelphia schools will dismiss students at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28th and Wednesday, August 29th. School-based employees are expected to work their normal work day and Administrative Offices will operate on regular business hours. All after-school activities including all athletic programs and professional development sessions scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday are canceled.

The general public and media are urged to monitor the District website at www.philasd.org, the District’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/PhillySchools, or our Twitter feed, @PHLschools, for further details. Updated information will also be posted on the District’s Information Hotline at 215-400-INFO (4636).

Next week, anyway, it’s back to school as usual.

Wednesday night will stay warm and muggy, but temperatures are expected to cool down slightly by the end of the day Thursday, and we’ll probably see some showers and thunderstorms toward the evening. The weekend will bring relief, with high temperatures in the 80s, though there’s a chance of rain and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday as well.
