It took 15 hours on Friday for animal workers to rescue 276 puppies from a residence in Monmouth County in what officials are calling the “worst animal hoarding case” in the county’s history, the Inquirer reports.

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office posted about the incident on Facebook over the weekend, along with a slew of pictures.

The puppies were smaller-breed dogs, and officials say they were in fair condition, despite “deplorable” living quarters, the Inquirer reports. Charges against the dogs’ owners have not yet been announced.

The dogs, which are not yet ready for adoption, are being cared for at local shelters.
