Amy Joyner, a 16-year-old sophomore at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington, Del., died Thursday morning at her school just before classes began for the day, 6ABC reported[2]. Joyner was reportedly assaulted by several students in a girls’ bathroom.

“There was an altercation that initially started between two people, and my understanding is that additional individuals joined in against the one person,” Gary Fullman, chief-of-staff to the Wilmington mayor, told CNN[3].

Principal Stanley Spoor said at a news conference Thursday that Wilmington police are questioning two students. No charges have been filed.

The fight reportedly began around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday in a bathroom on the school’s main floor. After the incident, the rest of the day’s classes were cancelled, and parents were called to come pick up their children.

Medical personnel performed CPR on Joyner while she was taken on a stretcher to a waiting helicopter. She was flown to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and was pronounced dead. Officials are awaiting autopsy reports to determine the cause of death.

“I’m so upset that the young lady lost her life today,” Mayor Dennis Williams said at the press conference. “Things like this shouldn’t happen. My heart bleeds for the family, the kids that go to this school, administrators and our city.”

Joyner was known to be quiet and hard-working, and even had a knack for preventing fights[4] between other students.

A vigil for Joyner was held Thursday night, and classes will be let out early today.
