Tornado Watch Issued for Philadelphia Area

The watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Philadelphia and the surrounding counties until 11 p.m.

The warning — which encompasses the Baltimore/Washington and Philadelphia areas — calls for possible isolated hail, up to a quarter in size, likely wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and “a couple” strong tornadoes possible.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected tonight, with flooding in certain areas. The NWS Mt. Holly branch says wind gusts will be in the 50 to 55 miles per hour range in this area.

A tornado watch does not mean they are imminent. It merely means the conditions for producing tornadoes are expected in the coming hours. A warning is the real thing to look out for: That means a tornado is imminent, and you are urged to seek shelter to protect yourself immediately.
