POLL: LGBT Americans Struggling to Afford Health Care
A new Gallup Poll suggests that people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender are more likely to be uninsured than those who don’t identify as LGBT. This remains true even after the Affordable Care Act’s stipulations requiring Americans to have health insurance went into effect.
Some of the reasons this may be happening, the poll suggests, is that “one-quarter of LGBT adults report they did not have enough for money for healthcare needs at least once in the last year, compared with 17 percent of non-LGBT individuals.”
Another upsetting finding is that 29 percent of LGBT Americans say they do not have a personal doctor (compared to 21 percent reported by heterosexual people). And LGBT women are “nearly twice as likely as non-LGBT women to lack a personal doctor.”
