Team Philadelphia is having a hell of a day at the Gay Games in Cleveland. This morning we reported that track and field runner Anna Aagenes took home gold in the age 18-29 women’s 5K, and now I’m getting word that two more teams have scored that most precious of medals.
The Fairmount Fillies, a team of women from the Fairmount Park Women’s Softball League, won gold this afternoon in a game against the Cleveland Seven Strikes. Team Captain Susan Zawislak tells me the score was 8 to 0. Ouch.
“It was a great game,” she says. “The weather was great, and we had a lot of fun.”
The Fillies are undefeated at this year’s Gay Games. Plus, the team is still reeling from exciting news at this year’s opening ceremonies, where two of their members, Sharon Jann and Jennifer Welch, got engaged.
The City of Brotherly Love Softball League (CBLSBL)’s Philadelphia Fusion also scored gold in the C Division this afternoon, beating the Dallas Eagle Knights in a tight 10 to 9 championship game. Team member Jeffrey Sotland tells me the unofficial MVP of the day was Pete Clark, who batted three for three, and caught the pop fly that ended the game.
Track and field runner Brian Arcedera, who I reported earlier won silver in the men’s 100 hurdles, also won a bronze medal in this afternoon’s 4 by 200 relay. He’s pictured above, second from left, with his teammates from across the globe.
Congrats to all the winners. Keep bringing home those medals!
