Gay Things to Do in Philly This Week: Equality Forum, the Little Mermaid at Tabu, and Joshua Thomas Sings

Tabu's Disney Takeover

The Gayborhood's premiere Ariel the mermaid impersonator, Ariel Versace, is going under the sea and through a cavern of Disney classics for an imaginative show Wednesday at Tabu. She'll be joined by drag queens like Farrah Mascara, Mary D'Knight, Iris Spectre, and Icon Ebony-Fierce, who will take on everyone from Ursula to Cruella Deville to Maleficient, and even a little Raven Simone. Joshua Thomas Live at Hylo

Philly singer-songwriter (and, I'll admit, one of my long-standing #MCMs) Joshua Thomas will perform a live set in support of his current crowd-sourcing campaign to fund his next EP, The Harboring. Thomas will perform some songs from the anticipated EP, some from his last release, Halfway, and, if his last show at Tin Angel is any indication, maybe a Mariah Carey cover or two. Stay tuned later this week for my Q&A with Thomas, where he talks about the inspiration behind The Harboring, which he describes as "a collection of songs about a collection of men." Sexy! "You Are You" Photography Exhibit

It's hard to believe it's Equality Forum time again, but it is, folks. The annual national LGBT convention's panels and parties don't start till Friday, but Thursday will see the opening of this year's official art exhibit, photographer Lindsay Morris's "You Are You." The works capture the goings-on at a camp for gender-nonconforming youth and their families. The stunning images show young people reveling in an environment where it's okay to question gender. The sense of strength, and wonderment that comes from their experimentations is radiating. This is the 15th annual LGBT art exhibit, which Equality Forum Executive Director Malcolm Lazin tells me is the longest consecutively running LGBT art show in the nation. Go. See. It.
