WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 9 Gay Ways to Celebrate the Last Weekend of Summer

A Friday to Saturday guide to help you get the most (gay) out of Labor Day weekend.

While Beyoncé, Macklemore, Calvin Harris and a host of other mega-star national acts fire up JFK Boulevard at this weekend’s Made in America Festival, another tall drink of water will be hosting a show of her own across town that’s decidedly more local and even a little more gay. Hosted by three drag kings (Jess Conda, Charlotte Ford and Jenn Kidwell), Martha Graham Cracker’s Made in Philadelphia Festival will showcase some of Philly’s brightest homegrown talents, including a few Philadelphia Live Arts Festival + Philly Fringe sneak peeks. G Philly summer cover boy Gunnar Montana will offer a taste of his much-anticipated Basement, and Geoff Sobelle will perform scenes from his Fringe premiere, Object Lesson. And the Groundswells Players promise male nudity in their piece about masculinity. The night will close with a performance by Miss Graham Cracker, who, this year is celebrating the eighth anniversary of performing with The Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret. It’s a great way to celebrate the end of summer with some of our very own rising and established stars. Sat., Aug. 31, 8 p.m., $10-$15, Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., johnnybrendas.com
