Military Bases Combat Budget Cuts with Fireworks Furlough this Independence Day

Don’t expect to see bombs bursting in air or the rocket’s red glare over many military bases this Independence Day—there just simply isn’t enough cash to expend on non-lethal, entertainment-focused projectiles. Budget cuts have forced a celebration of our freedom by those who fight for it by the wayside at major military camps like Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg and the Marine Corps Logistics Base. Independence Day at Camp Lejeune typically costs around $100,000, so officials hope that the cuts will “ensure that we can mitigate the fiscal challenges we are currently facing,” in the words of Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry. Proof once again that no one is more familiar with sacrifice than the American soldier. [CBS]
