Are You Wearing Purple Today?

Today, we encourage you to show your spirit by wearing purple. Every year millions of Americans don purple duds to support Spirit Day, which was created to bring awareness to bullying and to show support for LGBT youth across the country.

Sometimes living in the fifth largest city in the United States means we can sometimes take for granted what it’s like growing up in communities where being gay not only means you suffer greater incidences of violence, but also that you can be bullied and even kicked out of your home.

So in addition to making a bold fashion statement today, there are other ways to get involved, like going purple on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. You can also use GLAAD’s Spirit Day tool to help spread the word.

You can also take part using your smartphone. GLAAD and Toyota Financial Services have teamed up to launch the Go Purple for Spirit Day app for iPhone and Android. The app provides anti-bullying resources, calls to action and a tool to help turn your pics purple to share online on Facebook, Twitter and even Instagram.

Just share your pics and tweets with the hashtag #SpiritDay. And don’t forget to share your pics on Flickr, Pinterest and Tumblr.
