The Checkup: New York Woman to Give Birth in an Art Gallery

She's calling it "performance art"

This week’s turning out to be a bizarro one in the health-news world. Today’s “did that really happen” headline comes out of New York City, where a local woman is planning to give birth in an art gallery in front of, well, whoever cares to watch—maybe you?

She’s an artist, you see, so she’s calling it “performance art” and using the opportunity to demonstrate to women that their bodies and the birthing process are breathtakingly beautiful things, like art. At eight months pregnant, she’s set up a corner of the Brooklyn gallery as her birthing center, bringing in a rocking chair and a birthing tub—and, oh yeah, her grandmother’s bed. A doula and midwife will be on hand to assist.
